Post by: lordpsk on 22 February 2009, 14:17:24
Hi,

Just been bought back home by RAC as therer was oil leaking from gearbox going onto hot exhaust. Gearbox is juddering, they say its the torque converters needs changing. Anybody any suggestions, also open to suggestions or offers off anybody who has a secondhand gearbox with torque converter.

i would be inclined to check the level first, then find the leak and fix it.highly unlikely that you have torque converter failure.

Have checked the levels several times as described in the haynes manuel, it has used oil on ech occassion, it is definately gearbox oil thats leacking coming from bottem of bell housing bolts. As son as the level begins to drop the car begins to judder because its failing to take up the drive correctly, the car has done 160k miles and only passed it MOT again on Friday

Looks like it's time to bite the bullet, and get the box out then.

Its called the torque converter seal and sits beween torque convertor & g/box.  ATF will leak into bellhousing and out thro drain and then blow over exhaust!  Seal Part Nş 96015187 around £30 from Vx, £19 on TC.

Remove cats, gearbox and torque converter as one unit.  Upend gearbox and remove torque converter - you will see seal at back of bell housing held in by 3 torx screws.  It is this seal which has probably gone.
