Title: My facelift - cambelt failure
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 14 November 2007, 19:39:52
Unfortunately I'm not joking.   :'(

As I was pulling onto the drive tonight, I heard a funny noise.

Thinking it was my aux belt tensioner, I opened the window to listen more as I went along, and I then heard an absolutely horrific metallic noise from the engine, followed by it promtly dying, and then refusing to turn over (or do anything). There was no other noise around, so I heard it clearly, and it was seriously not good.

It died probably around 3k revs (uphill drive) so if this is the case, it won't be pretty.

Such a nice car too, and such a bad time. I have reciepts for the belt kit being done, and it had easily 10,000 miles to go.

I'm convinced it's cambelt failure. I'll investigate more, when I eventually get a day off. Until then - no wheels for James.

Words cannot describe how upset I am right now  :'(

Sorry to hear James  :( Hope it isnt cambelt failure......it could be summat on the aux belt siezed  :-/

But i carnt believe you tried to start it again after the noise you describe and it stalling  :o
I know its tempting but its a BIG no no......if it was cambelt ( hopefully not tho) you could have done more damage than already done.

So sorry to hear this James. I dont know if there's anything I can do, but I will certainly try. The first thing you need to do is to find out exactly what has happened in there. Is it belt or tensioner failure. I know that the garage I used will not have used Vx parts, independents just dont do that. He will have got the bits from Andrew Page, and whether they come with any kind of warranty or not, I just couldn't say. Keep us informed.

Steve.

Is there not a slight possibility that it could be something like the starter motor / starting ring mangled together? Earlier today James was talking about having clutch judder as well, this all could be pure coincidence I know.

Just keeping fingers crossed that it turns out to be something easily fixed......

It's not your fault in the slightest mate. There is nothing you need to do, so please don't worry about trying to find out about warrantees etc. There won't be one - It's just bad luck!

My next step will be to get the cambelt covers off and see if I can determine exactly what's gone on, in there. I am expecting to find a top idler buggered, and a belt shaved of a few teeth, but we shall see!

Mark - fancy swapping the 2.5 heads for a set of 3.0 ones?  ::)

To answer the Q, it can't be anything aux belt related - aux belt was off (after the clatter).

The noise I describe was a "terminal engine fubared" noise - nothing to lose situation.

I'll probably drop the 3.0 lump in, when I get some confidence back  :'(

Also, TD, Won't turn over, means using a ratchet and an E20 socket....not cranking on the key!

Hopefully its something gone wrong with, say, the clutch, and its not fubar'd heads...

Bu66er!  :'(

I once had a starter motor come loose on me (just as I was trying to out-drag someone off the lights ::)) and the noise sounded terminal. The fix was easy - tighten the 3 retaining bolts and carry on. It's not always as bad as it sounds. Given a little clutch judder preceded it it's possible something came apart in the clutch I guess.

Either way it's going to involve a bit of work to fix it I'm afraid. The offer still stands in a weekend or two - to help get it mobile again rather than to spectate at the LPG fitting ;)

I'm starting to recover from the shock of it a bit... it will be RUNNING by the time we planned to install the LPG - with a bl00dy 3.0 lump in there if needs be  [smiley=evil.gif]

After all your work mate, that's shocking.

On the "working under cars" thing, the only concern I've had was when I was gas-axeing bits of Mini off, and set the car I was under alight...  ;D

Not really

Don't forget - up till now, 99.9% of my cars have been project cars, on which you expect setbacks and failures - it's all part of the fun!

This is the first real serious breakdown I've ever had, with a decent Omega :y
