Title: Paperclip test not working???
Post by: ianph on 24 February 2009, 17:34:54
In recent weeks i have had a number of fault codes appearing  while doing the paperclip.

However today, after changing plugs and leads, cleaning ICV and breather pipes i thought id run another paperclip.

The EML light appears when ignition light is on,but as soon as the paperclip is inserted the EML light extinguishes.I firstly though i might of placed paperclip in wrong position but after double and triple checking,i am doing the test right.

Any ideas?

Just check that one of the terminals hadnt backed out of position when you insert the paper clip

If the work you have done related to previous codes thrown would it not now be "code-free" hence no flashing of the EML :-/

Should EML light not go out though when you turn the ignition on if you have no faults?

In my case the EML light comes on when ignition comes on,but goes out when car is started.

But as soon as the paperclip is inserted, the EML light goes out.

Fuse is ok.

would it not still give 12 to show start  of test?

With paperclip in place and engine running,EML light should repeatedly flash code 12,if this isnt happening then something is wrong, afaik.

While doing paperclip test previously there is no warning for the "start of test" it is straight into the fault codes.

Should i put paperclip in with engine running?

I was told that paperclip test on my model should be done with engine NOT running.

Do the paperclip test with engine NOT running.
You should get the test sequence first which will flash three times then any faults you may have will then flash in sequence, if you have no faults then the eml will flash the test sequence.

Well im well and truly stuck at the moment!

Just a couple of questions:

1. Am i right in thinking that if there are no faults, the EML will light up and then extinguish while ignition is on?

2.Any other reason my paperclip test isnt currently working? Fuse is ok,terminals ok,EML bulb works but goes out as soon as paperclip is inserted.

No it will still flash 12 over and over (I.E. more than 3 times)

Put the paper clip in the 3rd terminal up and then miss 1 terminal (2nd from top) with the ignition OFF then turn the key to number 2 and read the codes.

~Im talking about with the paperclip OUT.Does the EML light come on everytime you turn on the ignition and then extinguish before turning over the car?

Without the paperclip - yes comes on briefly when started

Ian,

How far are you from Reading? And is the car driveable?

if the eml acts normally with no paperclip, and nothing with the paperclip, there are no stored codes.  Later 2.0l (from around 97) do not flash out if no codes.

Hi mate,

Im in Sutton, so its probably gonna take around an hour or so. A3 onto M25 and round to your way.

Believe it or not the car is running better than ever...cleaned the breathers,ICV,changed sparks and leads.
I dont know if you remember but my problems originally started 2 days after i bought the mig.Engine went into limp mode and maxed out on 4000rmp(EML light on when engine running).
Original fault codes indicated cam and crank sensors. Now have the cam sensor(not yet fitted) but yet to buy crank.
Engine came out of limp mode for some reason and is now running very well.Just thought id try another paperclip today....and doesnt work. Also n eed a new airbag as light on dash is on and centre of steering wheel is soft and spongy.

posted exactly this a couple of months ago. The opinion then was, no codes. 4 pot does not flash 1,2 for diagnostic start, test does not work with engine running. No flashing means no codes. To prove unplug the maf or something safe to unplug, and test again. Should then get a maf code. Hth
