Title: Diagnostics help needed - ABS / TC Light on
Post by: stevebubs on 23 January 2009, 15:14:44
Had an intermittent ABS/TC issue prior to xmas. Was going to look at it but then the battery died and didn't need the car so laid it up over xmas.

Just been out, bought a battery and started the car. and the ABC/TC light remains on now. Obvious MOT failure (MOT due in a few days)

I don't suppose there's anyone in the Reading area with access to suitable diagnostic kit that would be willing to plug it in and help locate the source of the problem?

Thanks

Stephen

Good link but only gives engine codes, not ABS etc...

Hi Steve,

I currently have one of TheBoy's TechIIs and am located near Alton if that's any help?

Has the speedo packed up too?

Kevin

not 100% sure - only ran it up and down the drive (10yards or so).

Will check to make sure but it definitely packed up last time - symptoms were speedo would suddenly drop to zero and the ABS/TC lights would pop on.

Deffo your ABS ECU breaked m8 :(  Replacement -

Either a recon (~£130) or ex scrapper (~£40) - if the latter you need same part nş, and one off same year and model spec (otherwise you will need a tech2 session)

Barsteward of a job - poor access - but doable.

Plenty of links - search for abs ecu.

I agree ABS ECU .... :(

If you opt for the recon method ... bba-reman on  01634 687222 are worth a phone call ... they did a grand job on mine 18 months ago .. 5 day turn around, 2 year warranty, and no techII needed as it was "my" ecu ... £130 ... not sure what todays prices are .. but as I said.. worth a phone call .. :)

As the car is my spare and not worth a huge amount, if it's going to cost me £130+ to fix then the poor thing may well end up being broken and sold off piecemeal...

Please could you qualify this statement - why could it not be a sensor/wiring fault...?

Ta - may do. *If* I can get the root cause empirically confirmed...

Out of interest - if it is the ECU, what is normally the cause of failure?

Steve .. I believe .. though could be wrong .. that the ONLY common link between ABS / TC AND  Speedo (and sometimes heavy steering) is the ABS ECU .... you can lose them individually through a wiring/sensor fault .. but not all three.

From posts by experts (MarkDTM) I understand (I think) that there is an extremely thin wire inside the ECU that either corrodes or comes unsoldered and if you had the kit it might be fixable.

When bba-reman had mine, the telephoned fault report said 3 problems all fixable ... I said yes a £130 is a lot less than the £700 VX wanted for a new one .. although I now think they quoted for the full ABS unit, not just an ECU

HTH

Sounds like it, I have an invoice for a brand new abs ecu, £400 odd! parts only!

Thanks - that quantifies the problem somewhat and matches up with this thread..

Before I start ripping it apart though, is there a way to empirically show that it's the ECU at fault?

Just checked the MOT and it's actually run out so can't really take the car for a run....

It was exactly this problem that lead me to finding OOF ... I was desperately searching for info to avoid the £700 parts bill .. and labour on top ..

My googling found this

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152729807

and one thing lead to another ......

so I don't know if there is any info in there that might help you ..

Lights on and no speedo is breaked abs ecu - personnel experience m8.
Replaced mine with unit from scrapper - cured.

Right. Got the unit out at the weekend.

Anyone got a unit that will fit a 2000/W 2.5 v6 petrol auto facelift (whatamouthful) for sale?

Cheers

When I did mine only removed top hose.
You need same part nş which in on bottom of ecu.  Preferably from same spec motor to avoid need fot Tech 2 reprogramme.
