Title: Chipping my Tractor.
Post by: Psychoca on 15 February 2009, 13:16:07: I have been looking at putting the chip in my tractor to try to improve fuel economy and such.

I have seen one on ebay which seemingly would do a sufficient job. Any advice would be appreciated.

Might be looking to do this myself soon (I think that £300 tractor is available again, so will need an AR35 box).

If its an auto, get a 3.0 gearbox to go with it though otherwise you'll be stranded very soon after.

Hopefully onto better mpg... lol...

I knew you would...plus a good mate of mine is only up the road from you (Westwoodside) and need to pop up and see him soon.

If you're lucky it may just be a straight swap, but if like mine it may need some soldering work done.
And better MPG, well still reserve judgement on that.
Having said all this it's a must rechipping, got to be transforms the performance of my once sluggish TD.

The difference in general performance is IMMEDIATELY noticeable.
Mine now 'sings' at 75/80mph and returns a constant 33mpg.
Mrs Sethsmate loves driving it too!

Post by: Psychoca on 27 February 2009, 22:14:47: I have now got the new chip for my tractor... Unfortunately, I have spent about 3 hours tonight, trying to unsolder the old chip... Some of the solder came right of and I could clearly see the hole in the PCB for the leg... However, about 6 of the legs would not come unsoldered, even when I pulled out my 100watt soldering iron to try to shift the stuff...

Any ideas anyone????

I have ended up resoldering the old chip and shoving the unit back in the engine, just for the piece of mind of knowing that it is still working...

Anyone got an old unit with a socket for the chip in it they are wanting to part with???

Post by: unlucky alf on 27 February 2009, 22:35:13: havent you got a solder sucker or some braid?, either way if i were you i would get a socket to solder onto your board so it makes it a plug in, plus no danger of damaging the chip :y try & find a components shop for the socket ;)

Suggest a 100watt iron may do some damage to the pcb - keep to low wattage irons

Post by: unlucky alf on 28 February 2009, 09:07:50: do maplins do the socket as well?, might be worth an ask ;) & as pitchfork says a 100w iron could be a little high unless youve got some freeze spray ;), also did your chip come with instructions? make sure the cutout mark on chip goes the same way as the original :y

Post by: Psychoca on 28 February 2009, 11:34:46: I already have and was using my solder sucker, was aware of the orientation of the chip also... The problem I was get was the solder wasn't clearing the holes which was really annoying...

You may have had some dry joints!
Before anyone else says it - they're easier to light that way (reaches for coat) ;D
