Title: Help update
Post by: Muskie on 02 March 2009, 12:14:41
Hi All ,
Just had the aa out to look at why the power steering and the elec mirrors etc was not working.
He changed a fuse for the elec bits but said that the power steering pump was mechanical and not related.
Sods law but when I parked up this morning the steering was heavy but when aa guy arrived it was ok and back to normal.
Firstly has anyone experienced this before : is it the start of the end of the power steering pump and if so is this a costly thing to replace.

2.5 v6 1997 estate

Many thanks
Ian

A 'new' pump from Markey Mark sorted my inconsistant assistance power steering out.
Not too bad to fit either.  :y

It's strange, the pump is mechanical, but if you pull a fuse under the bonnet, the steering goes all heavy.   ::)

right before you launch into a new pump it is better to identfiy the problem.  The AA man is right and wrong: the pump is mechanical but there is a servotronic system that alters the amount of assistance depending on vehicle speed.  this is electronic and driven off the ABS/speedo system.  It is entirely possible that the fuse blowing mean that the system did not function properly and all you got was minimum assistance
