Title: Rear Coil Springs - Where to buy?
Post by: Chopsdad on 05 March 2009, 20:37:14
Last year local garage fitted 2 rear springs after the tails snapped and were picked up at MOT time.

Trouble is they are crap.  The car sits 20mm low at the back and 20mm high at the front which has led to tyre issues recently.

So, the cheapo's he fitted are gonna have to go - but other than Vx at £200+ what/who would you recommend?

(2003, 2.2 saloon, standard suspension)

I found these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-OMEGA-COIL-SPRINGS-REAR-2-2-2-0-2-5-2-5-3-0_W0QQitemZ220266301718QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item220266301718&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

my new garage suggested Euro car parts, but they don't have Vx registered as a manufacturer  :-/

Beware of euro car parts, they have the most veriable set of prices I have found and a rarely are the best value.

I rate the KYB springs (just paid 26+vat each for some) and the Lesjofers are good to

If they are the actual springs then they are not good, they have a constant thickness of spring coil which is likely to make the bum end harder and higher....the correct type have a thinning cross section spring material towards the ends to give variable rate

According to Tony a WIM my current coils have the wrong compression ratio causing the car to sit too low.  In turn this has led to too much heat in the rear tyres causing them to over inflate and wear out the middles. The short term solution was to increase the pressure to reduce the footprint, but with the already low rear suspension the effect is a very non armchair like feel to the old girl.

I'd like to fit some that are tried and tested and KYB via buypartsby seems like a good way to go.

The rear creaks badly now at rest - rear sub frame bushes?

They were 80 quid the pair and yes, KYB's

As for rear end noises, a suirt of penetrating fluid around the rubber bushes etc is recommended.

Also, did this start when the shocks were changed?

Mmmm not 100% sure when it started, but it's got worse since the springs and shocks were changed. With a boot full with 60kg of holiday kit and a car full of family recently it would groan when getting in and out of the car.  Now it's empty it creaks more often and is apparent over speed humps and under breaking in reverse at low speeds.

Mine has a very annoying creak/groan from the back end somewhere, it got 2 new Monroe shocks on it on Wednesday and the car now sits better and there isn't a knock/bang when going over a pot hole anymore but this groan is still there and it is beginning to get on my tits,i have sprayed a fair amount of WD on it last week but that didn't help,it sounds like a bush to me but i dont know anymore....even began thinking it was a driveshaft making the noise, im pretty convinced its coming from the driver's side, anyone got any idea's?
Starting to annoy me :)

Yeh, have to lift up the rear seat and lever a metal plate up a little IIRC.

mine had a creak. Esp over slopes or stear drive ways, or where one wheel was higher than the others, like mounting or dropping one a curb.

Then it failed the mot for rear donut bushes. Changed the bushes, no more creak. Only from drivers side iirc.

The bendy seat thing sounds cheaper and easier. Maybe try that first... what ever the plate is?

Under the arse, just pull the two tags at the seat base and it lifts up.
