Title: lit up like a xmas tree
Post by: andyc on 07 March 2009, 21:09:34
Had a good one today to sort out had the EML, ABS, AirBag, and TC lights on all at once.

The ABS & TC lights went off after a few miles and on slowing down the air bag light went out then the EML then they came on again as i put my foot down, oh and the trans wasn't shifting either.

Got the car in the workshop, popped the bonnet and had a look round and got  funny smell from the battery and smoke coming out of the event.

Checked the output pf the alternator and it was charging at 17 volts and cooking the battery

Disconnected the battert lead of the alternator and took it for a spin and now all the lights have gone out

Now the fun bit, swaping the alternator out, what an a**e of a job.

All back together and no lights on. so when all the dash lights come on check the simple things first

I had this problem with my old mig. When it happened it fried all the resistors on the back of the clocks and burnt the casing. I had to fit a new battery, new alternator and new clocks to resolve it. Plus pay the auto electrician who diagnosed it.

Local garage said it was charging properly  >:(

My brother-in-law had this problem (but on an old Citreon) a while ago. The battery was located behind the near side headlight, until it exploded, blowing out the headlight as it did so. All that was left of the battery was the terminals hanging off of the positive and negative cables! He said the 'flash' of the explosion came through all the heater vents :-O

So you where lucky! :-)
