HomeChoice support was superb, been with them 6 years now, didn't need support since Tiscali took over so can't comment...

One off test is no good, as stated on the program you need to check it over a few days at different times.

For instance at home i'm on AOL upto 8Mbps, but on Monday night at 9pm i was getting just under 3Mbps, but about hour later i was only getting 700kbps!!!

by 11pm it had gone back up to 1Mbps

Then last night at 6pm i was getting nearer 3Mbps again.

What they are trying to acheive is proof ISPs are charging a fortune and not suppplying anything near what they are suggesting.

That is very obvious form my result, 8Mbps my ar5e!  >:(

Virgin are rubbish, they used to be excellent but since NTL took them over they have transfered the Virgin customers onto th rubbish and over loaded NTL ones......hence its now VERY slow....

Hi Ken,

It all depends on what you are paying for.

For example, if you pay say £24.00 a month for 8mb, by doing this test it will tell you your broadband speed.

Are you getting what you pay for per month?

It seam's less fortunate country's have a triple broadband speed than the UK.

The idea of this campaign from the Gadget show is for us to get what we pay for.

It all depends on what you are paying for.

You have to remember that whatever your ISP advertises it as, you're paying for a heavily contended service so unless you do most of your surfing at 4AM you are not going to see the maximum theoretical throughput.

Contention in the BT network aside, some ISPs are better than others. Depends how much they invest against how many punters they ensnare. Difficult to quantify, and certainly not mentioned in their advertising.

On the mega stable Zen line, I get top whack all the time.

On the 'other ISP' line, 1 - 6M depending on time of day...

Ours is 986K down, 139K up on Speedtest, and 654K down, 195K up on Think. We are limited by the distance from the exchange, but are only paying £14.99/month with Freedom 2 Surf. It tends to be pretty stable (can't get much worse!)
