Title: thermostat removal....HEEELLLPPP....!!!
Post by: Nickffc on 08 March 2009, 13:01:35
HI CHAPS...

having had a major water leak from what i thought was the water pump...it turns out is coming from the thermostat  :housing....well i think so....?

now...i have removed everything i need to gain access to the thermostat housing and have just removed the nut....(not tork bolt) that holds the connecting pipe to the housing.....but i cant remove the connecting pipe as the dipstick is in the way...?
i cant twist the connecting pipe round as it's still got the bolt stud through it from the block....

how the hell do you get that bugger off....?

any help will be grateful as this little problem is going to turn me to drink if i cant work it out....!!!!

That will be whats affectionately known as the b*st*rd bolt that you have found then....   :D

Dipstick should move somewhat as the bracket thats in there too.  The transfer pipe will be stuck fast into the thermostat housing with crud buildup.  It should be a slick fit with an O ring in the housing but could have been 'done' before and sealant used.

Take care what you lever/twist as the securing bracket on the transfer pipe is easily broken, (as I found out when doing Kates car at Timbucks cambelt doo last year.....    :-[ )

Its a case of keeping the stat bolted to the block and working the transfer pipe around to get it to free off.

Other option is to keep the transfer pipe B-bolt fitted and detach the stat, then get soem good pliers on the stat and wiggle that end

well...

since my last post my internet connection went down and has only just come back.....???

after trying to get the thermostat out i decided to take off the black manifold spacer thing of to try to get a bit more room....then thought i'd better check again for the leak as i could see so much more.....

started to fill up with water and guess what........!!!
water leaking out of the area of the water cooler........!!!!! BUGGER!!!

as i couldn't get online to ask more questions i went out and got a copy of the haynes manual to see what is involved...!!!

anyone else had to take the oil cooler out????

so thinking first it was the water pump...then the thermostat, it turns out to be the oil cooler......? the leak seems to be coming from the oil pipe union closest to the front of the engine...?

i think i may as well change the cam belt while I'm at it.... a friend of mine has the locking kit that i can loan....!!

When I do mine I'm going to cut the transfer pipe up to remove it then get the head off

Yes, thats the bastard bolt.

Move the PAS reservoir (beware ther is a small hole in the lid which should be plugged first) and in the process of doing this, you should see the B-bolt!

Once this is out, thats it, the dipstaick, engine mount and transfer pipe will be free.

The oil cooler plate seal is not to bad a job to do, just follow the oil cooler guide and undo the unions at the block end having removed the oil cooler housing (dont bend the pipes!)

And Martin, you do NOT need to cut the pipe at all, particularly whne taking the head off as the cambelt back plate will be out the way.

this is the problem.....it's not a tork bolt...it's a stud sticking out of the block....? probably put in after the last this was done...lost the bolt so put in a stud...?i have managed to get the nut off the was on the stud so now the dipstick, engine hoist eye and thermo pipe are loose but because the stud is there nothing will slid out....?...i m gonna have to try and work out how to remove the stud from the block to get anything out...? but as you know....it's rather tight down there....!!!!

also......got the replacement thermostat, a couple of sealing ring for the oil cooler and water bridge.....but cant get hold of gaskets and "o" rings for the inlet manifold and plenum.....!!!!
is it worth putting it all back without new gaskets or "o"rings???

Is there anough length on the stud to double nut it - where one nut is screwed on and another is also screwed on then both are locked very tightly against each other, then place a socket over both and then unscrew the stud??

Yes put it all back together. You don't really need 'O' rings for the inlet manifold to plenum unless you have lost them or they are damaged.

the bit I'm worried about is the flange gaskets both sides........there's none missing and don't seem to be damaged in any way...????

Blimey, signs of a coolant system with little or no antifreeze then!

you would think....? i'v had the car about two years and has always had anti freeze...?

it looks like the crud on the plate has been keeping the system sealed....till now...?

maybe the recent cold weather was just to much for it... we have been loosing a little water over the last few weeks....

just off to the dealers to get a cover plate....but they dont have the 'O' rings....!!!! so i'll be hunting around like mad so i can get this done today, my try a saab dealer as they use the same engine in one of there models....!

You could always re-use the O rings with some grey sealent added.

Surprised you can get the cover plate!

£15 + vat for the cover plate...

got the bajo rings.... just need the oil cooler to cover plate rings....

I replaced the inlet gaskets as a matter of course but they are expensive and I think the old ones were fine.
If I were you I'd re-use.

Oil cooler seal is just silicone sealant and is a common place for a leak.  A pain to do in my view as the oil pipes need slackening off by the filter and even then, it's difficult to replace the oil cooler mounting plate without damaging/spreading the sealant trace.

Its not just silicon sealent at all!

Its a special loctite sealent which is pressure, heat, water, anti freeze and oil tolerant!

The inlet gaskets will be fine though  :y

so..... while trying to get the thermostat out....i....err........broke the transfer pipe bracket thing....!!! so i then had to try to get the pipe off.... out came the hammer and chisel......sealed every hole that any bits of pipe could go and carefully SMASHED THE opps OUT OF THE GOD DAMM PIPE....!!!!!...... :D :D :D

actually got a pretty good clean break..? inspecting the transfer pipe there was no way in hell that i was going to get it off any other way... it was full of crap round the seal and welded tight...

third time visit to the dealers and got the transfer pipe £11 inc

just a matter of putting everything back

oil cooler and plate back on
water bridge in
thermostat and transfer pipe in
black inlet flange in
inlet manifold in....

just leaves plenum and pipes
refill cooling system
flush system, fit new oil filter and fill with oil

fingers crossed i get everything connected the right way round...?

i'll do the rest in the week after work....

gonna have a beer now and sort some pictures to post here....

..... other than....

Told Ya!!   ;D

When I broke Kates one at Timbucks, luckily Martin (Issunaz) had a spare in his Fiesta van and we got it sorted.  Kates was full of crud round the O ring as well.....   :y
