Title: she's tapping
Post by: fudy on 10 March 2009, 12:54:00
Sorted the tensioner pulley that was running dry. now i can hear where the noise is coming from. it's tapping slightly on one side of the head and noticibly quieter on the other! im assuming its a noisy tappet so a few oil changes are in order!? the noise is constant but does not go away when the engine warms up? I was thinking of using a bit of wynns but shes done 124000 so there could be a lot of gunk to come loose!!! ive also notice she idles a bit rough some of the time but it seems to get better as she warms up!

I had exactly the same on my old 2.5 - it's a busted cam follower. No amount of oil changes etc will cure it unfortunately. The spring inside breaks and it has to be replaced if you want the noise to go!

Should be fine. I've done over 1000 miles on a colapsed lifter :D

Might as well get it done with the timing belt. It will have to be taken off anyway. I haven't looked at prices for mine yet but I doubt they're too expensive. Are you doning the belt yourself?

was thinking of doing it myself but the locking kit prices could force a garage job :(

As Omega Man states quite correctly - you can drive without problems for a while. Remember though that it will damage the affected cam lobe over time. Best thing is to change them all for a sweet running engine!
