Title: Steering whine noise
Post by: HerefordElite on 09 March 2009, 13:21:52
have recently noticed a whine which i think is coming from steering pump.

When stationary i can apply steering and no sound but then if i rev the motor while doing it the noise appears?

steering pump or any other ideas? :-/

Hallo M8,

Is the vehicle Power Steering? Check the Power Steering Fluid.
You may be short or low.

loose or old/worn aux belt, check the tensioner, possibly? Also the tensioner bearing can screach a bit, just grease it, or buy the pulley wheel on its own with new bearing in it.

If the pumps low on fluid you can usually hear a sort of sucking noise on lock to lock

The whining noise is air within the system.

Check all pipe connections for tightness, particularly the jubilee clipped below the reservoir before delving deeper.
While you're there, take off the reservoir cap, and see if there's any frothing of the fluid.
If these checks are okay, it's probably the PAS pump failing.
