Post by: Jimbob on 01 November 2007, 19:48:02
Just received a flyer through the door

I'm going shopping :)  :y

Not a fan of their stands - they do not really fit chassis rails too well.

Went to a VAT free evening last week. Why don't they have either trolleys or baskets in the store? By the time I'd picked up a couple of bottles of welding gas, a petrol strimmer, a sack trolley and a bench grinder my arms were about to fall off! Couldn't carry anything else.

I'd dreading the next one because I might remember to take my own basket and then I'll spend a fskng fortune!  :o

I totally agree. I bought some, and they are now heading to the bin. Although they seem to support the car OK, they give me no faith what-so-ever.

Ok then, stands off the list....

But what stands DO you recommend then?

I've got some old Paddy Hopkirk ones that are superb. Really stable. Got some newer ones too, I think just basic ones from Halfrauds although I can't remember the make. Will check tonight.

We had a trouser browner at the Tidworth cam belt party where some RAC folding ones suffered rivets pulling through  :o so probably best to avoid those, or anything that's not welded together, IMHO.

I've got two Clarke torque wrenches (different ranges) good build quality but a pain to set up. Firstly the scales usually need converting from Nm to kg/ft using a conversion chart. Secondly the scale on the wrenches themselves are confusing to read and can easily be set wrongly.

Cheap though  :y

Forgot and almost missed this!

Just been and got the CTJ2LR jack, looks nice middle range, not too big or small
and went for the torque wrench as well,  both measurements on it and only £12  :y

Just need to pick some stands up from Halfords now, quite like the look of their ratchet ones

But not accurately and rubbish at metal......it operates at very high torque at low speed which hand drills are crap at.

The pillar drill is also excellent for cleaning valves to!

I use it for metal working mainly plus some wood work (it can accept morticing drills).....

Had a similar experience in W H Smiths as well....

Just wandered past the pen counter, and this saleswoman asked if if I wanted a pen that writes upside down and under water.

I said no thanks, then showed her a bic biro I carry, and suggested she started pushing these, told her they write any word you can think of, not limited to just 4 like those weird ones.  ;D

Sorry, I'll get my coat.

I'm really pleased with the combined bench grinder and belt sander I bought. A very impressive bit of kit for 25 notes.

I wasn't so impressed when I saw the state of my recently-polished car that I failed to remove from the garage before trying it out.

Why isn't everything in life as good as buying power tools?  ;D

Another forum of which I am a member has a really nice emoticon of a bloke banging his head against a wall. I could do with that right now.

Now, Where's my PLUMber's wrench gone? :-/

I got two, two tonne ramps from halfords. A bit short to reach the front wheels, but a bit of 4X3 does the job. £34.

The yanks spent millions at NASA developing those pens that write upside down, the Russians use a pencil.

But then, only one tonne each. i.e. less than the weight of the car. I appreciate that one stand only supports part of the weight but even so, with the thing jacked up where does the centre of gravity lie??

I don't know the answer but am concerned that people may read 2 tonne axle stands and think that that is 2 tonnes each.  :(

Aye. And I have 6.5 litres of it on my driveway after a miscommunication over the oil cooler pipes during Engine Swap No 2.
