Hi all well the last few weeks i have had a rubbing sound when driving my car and i just thought it might be the break shoes was rubbing with the disc.Anyway today i took the back wheels off and bricks on the front wheels and put it into gear. The sound isnt coming from the rear break discs it seems to be coming from under the car ie prop shaft or the diff. Can anyone help with what my prob is i really hope its not the diff on its way out
-
Think i might of found where the sound is coming from.Where the prop goes from the engine then to the back half prop the mount that hols them in its coming from there i think. Is there a bearing in there
-
Does the noise change pitch as you speed up seemingly getting faster with your speed, and get louder when you take your foot off the gas?
-
No the faster i go the faster the sound goes it doent really get louder and when i take my foot of the gas and start slowing down the sound gets less faster if that makes sence
-
Check see if you have any oil in the diff. I'd change it anyway while your under there :y
-
I was told by the guy who fixes my car that if your diff starts whining its generally on its way out, if he's right. You can pick good second hand ones up off ebay for £80
-
It sounds like its coming from the prop shaft centre bearing carrier
-
Its not a whining sound more of a rubbing sound. Also when i turn the prop by hand u cant hear any nouser coming from the diff
-
So no grinding noises when you spin it at all?
-
Nope not even when i spin it by hand.I even span it by hand on both back wheels and u cant hear and whining noise
-
What about if you spin one of the back wheels? Does it make the noise then? If so is it on just one side or both sides?
-
Even when i spin both back wheels no sound
-
Can't imagine it being the drivetrain then. Might sound obvious but have you double checked that its nothing simple like something rubbing one of your wheels? Could even be an under inflated tyre?
-
Right well the wheels aint rubbing i started the car up and put it in gear and then got right under the diff and the nosie aint coming from there.Had a quick look at the diff oil and i was surprised that the oil was very clean a nice light brown colour
-
surely its the diff - remember a rubbing sound on my Carlton - it was diff
-
Might be not sure as when im right under the diff with the car in drive the sound aint coming from the diff
-
Have you checked your wheel bearings?
Paul :y
-
the sound isnt coming from the wheels its coming from under the car
-
I'm think most likely wheel bearing myself, just about to have my diff replaced so surely yours would have the same symptoms as mine. I think there some information somewhere about how to check bearings but i can't remember where it is. Normally you can hear a bearing though when you spin the wheel off the ground. It could even be comin from the front wheels as it is hard to pinpoint where it is from inside the car when you are driving.
Hope this helps :)

I have had all 4 wheels off the ground and have spin all four of them and no sound so i can rule that one out plus i only had the car MOT 1 month ago and the sound was there before it when it for MOT so if it was wheel bearing they would of picked it up
