A couple days ago on the forum I read a post about removal of the siren as they a common part to fail.
The reason for this is simple, directly above the siren and horn sounder is the drain off from the tray below the windscreen.
What happens next is a sympton of a poor design. The water flows through the drain hole and straight over your siren. Over time the seal of the siren perishes. Next you get small amount of water penatration, which eventually shorts out one of the resistors inside.
After this periodically the siren goes off setting the rest of your alarm off. Once this happens the siren is dead, and must be removed or replaced.
To avoid this is simple. Take out bung on the drain, jubilee clip a longer hose to it and replace the bung.
Although this does not happen on all sirens, it is luck of the draw whether seal fails or not on your unit.

Nice solution :y However, it's not just down to water, the batteries are Ni-Cads and after repetative charging tend to leak their contents all over the control board.
Another thing that's worth doing is adding an in-line fuse onto the power feed to the unit as the feed has some ridiculously hi amperage fuse fitted.

Nice idea you have but its wrong, the battery cells them self have the leak due to the seals failing. The problems start when the goo starts to leak out over the board.
I havent looked at any other GM cars so wont go down that road but its safe to say at about 10 years the backup sounder should be replaced or just thrown away.

I tried to take a power sounder apart at the week end , the one I was playing with was filled with some sort of potting compound making it just about impossible to take apart , after about an hour of trying it ended up in the bin :-[
