Thinking of getting a full set of these, has anyone had any experience with them on a Mig?
-
I have just worn a set out. Good wet and dry handling , wear rates seemed ok. I still have them on my TVR and VW Golf. Just replaced them with Falken ZE912's on the Omega as I do a shed load of motorway miles and the 912's (NOT 512s as they are the old model and are rubbish!) were cheaper and seemed well rated as a cruising tyre. I havent been disappointed so far (3k ish miles in) they are performing nicely.
camskill online is the cheapest place to get them
-
I've heard good things about these too - funny that, I'm about to get a full set too!
Web reviews are very complimentary of these - apparently similar in performance to the Toyo Proxes T1-R.

Where are you getting yours from?

I was just about to order them off blackcircles - or get them fitted at WIM before getting the geometry done - but the camskill site shows the cheapest price I've ever seen for them! - well worth buying four, getting them delivered, and chucking them in the car to get fitted at WIM (to be fair, I haven't checked how much they'd charge to fit them).

Spooky that ::)
I've just been speaking to Tony @ WIM about prices for a set of four as I want to get them fitted before my geo is set up :y
-
spooky indeed. :o
How much does he charge for them?
-
Use WIM for the Geo and tyre fitting , I wouldnt let anyone else near my Miggy but you really wont get a cheaper price for tyres than Camskill. Been there done that, now I just go to camskill for tyres then get WIM to fit them.

£82.50 all in per corner

Just what I was thinking - I'd definitely go nowhere else for the geo setup. Can I ask how much WIM charges to fit tyres?

That's pretty good! for about 7.50 a corner more, all fitted, than camskill, that sounds like my next order is sorted. thanks for that :y

Blimey his prices have come down in the last few weeks ! Thats about the same as it would cost to buy from camskill then get him to fit them,

Camskill are charging £73.80 ea at the moment - plus delivery gets it up to about £75 a tyre. To get them fitted at WIM would cost more than to buy them from there and get them fitted! :y

Good all round tyre for the price, exceptional grip in the dry, above average in the wet, and quiet, never use them on the mig yet, but on my Volvo 850R I get around 4000 miles out of them before there shreaded, which is good. :y

I do hope you're caning your car then, because 4k miles would mean I'm changing all four tyres every two months, and that ISN'T good! :o

Side walls on these far too soft, used them before and you can tell it's a problem straight away, no such issues with the Falken, currently using Kumho Ecsta, do a google search ther are very, very good too.

Nope, just average wear for the 850R, front wheel drive and 250BHP eats tyres, thats just normal for these, used many brands of tyres and Falken is what I've use for around the last 5-6 years, should do around 13,000-15000 on a mig.

Phew, that's more like it, should last about 5 years with the little mileage mine does ::)

Er right, where to start...i have the 912s and had the 452s on my old mig. Basically they tick most of the boxs in my book, wet and dry grip is good, they are quiet and last ok but not as long as Pipelli p 6000s but are cheaper, also they seem to give a supple ride, and therein lies the problem imho, the carcus/construction.
I should say this is not confirmed but i beleive they have a problem with tram lining, both the 452s and the 912s. My evidence? Well more reliably a mate has BMW E39 with michelins, he drove his mates E39 with Falkens and found them awfull by comparison, inaccurate and wayward on the motorway and a hand full on bumpy back roads. The two cars have had extensive bush and controle arm work done as they are sensative to bush play. They are both up on all their maintenance.
I have had a devil of a job with very similar handling issues, and have replaced all the bushes with firmer items on my car. The symptoms remain. A visit to Kevin Wood for a tech2 session turned into a test drive of each others cars. His has Dunlop sport max 2s iirc and tracks as straight and true as any car i have driven, he says he suspects his wishbones or tires are about to go. Yet his mv6 is 50 times more accurate than my elite with new bushes all round new rear shocks and springs and new tires, its arm had wim set up and inspection for steering idler springs etc. I cant see mv6 suspension making any difference to side ways movement with my Elite suspension. So i lay the blame fairly and squarely with the tyres on my car, 912s. I had the 452 s on my old car and found them similarly wayward. Basically it feels like your driving in a constant crosswind, they seem to pick up every imperfection and over react. I have since pumped them up to 36psi to keep the buggers straight and this has helped alot but the ride is now too harsh.
I hope to prove this by swapping wheels with different tyres on and feel the car transform. I hope so or i have bought a cut and shut bendy bus.
From my experience, i would say avoid, but the member above seems happy with them.

My Elite also has a tendency to wander around a bit. Its done it on Michelins , 452's and 912's, all felt exactly the same. I dont get this problem on either my VW Golf or my TVR wich also have 452's on.
I did have a severe tramlining problem for a while which turned out to be geometry fixed by WIM :y

What tyre size and pressures you running on the omega?

Wim will recommend doing the geometry 1st, as it is more accurate as all the suspension is loaded as it has been driven, loads change one you take the wheels off which can take a little while to settle in again.
I had tyres and geometry twice at wim, they have done geometry 1st both times.

Standard size tyres 235/45 17 at 32psi. Havent tried experimenting with the pressures on the 912's as my tyre guage has broken....
-
got 225/50/16 FK452 fitted to mine - bought from Camskill and fitted locally.
Grip seems preaty good and they wearing ok so i'd recommend them as a decent budget performance tyre :y

Thanks for coming back with info.
A bit concerning to me as i started with exact same psi and the size is the same.
I have issues and you dont.

Yes, and he has 16's and you have 17's!

I do have issues , the Omega wanders around a bit and needs regular small steering corrections (but its not so bad that its a real concern). Its not the falkens as it did it with the michelins too. I had theboy turn down the power assitance on the steering which has improved it a bit. New front wishbones and new rear springs havent made any difference. Steering idler, box etc all checked and fine so not sure whats next to try. Might go for a new donut bush on the diff , its possible the rear is a bit loose and that could be causing it.

Yes, your no the exact same path i was on, did all the usual fixes and ran out of things to try once the donut bushes where fitted,(i assume that what you mean) the originals had a creak and failed the mot. Fitted senator donuts from first line and could feel the difference/improvement and the creak has gone, but the wandering is still there. If it aint the tyres... Well, dont know what it could be...?
Like you though, i think i had become used to some pulling no the steering wheel and when the back started to move around i assumed the donut bushes would cure it. But no. Then i drove Kevins car and realised how bad my car was and how much i was putting up with. Road work seems and groves just did not affect his at all. You could feel the bumps and the suspension ride them but no pulling no the wheel at all. My car however was a mare over the exact same route, i didnt realise how bad until i drove Kevins.
There is a width restriction in Reading i have to go through now and then, the tarmac has dipped where all the cars have been though leaving 2 tram lines. My car pulls like mad through there, the
s.wheel as almost at 3 oclock position just to keep it straight and not hit the curb. Its like the tyres are trying to clime out of the trench, if you know what i mean...? Not nice.
-
I have a pair of 452's on the rear of my Omega and have been very pleased with them thus far - about 800 miles in, or thereabouts.
Also had a pair fitted to the front of my Toledo T Sport, and rate them well on that car too.
Seem to be pretty solid tyres; great in the dry, very decent in the wet (snow - well.....only went sideways once :D ) I read all manner of reviews before getting these fellas, and am pleased with them.
-
Just had event tyres fit 4 912s for £304.68 all in - and they come to you!
-
good tyre i've got them on both my cars, omega and vectra and they seam good, nice consistant grip
-
Well I've had my Falken ZE912s on for a whole day now and even though I've only done about 50 miles I'm amazed by the transformation. My Omega feels smoother, quieter and handles much better than when on the previous Pirelli P7s.(even though they had plenty of tread left) It no longer feels like a supermarket trolley. All this before I've even arranged for Wheels in Motion to do their magic!
I hope this isn't a temporary reprieve! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
-
Dad had them on his Primera he got around 15k had them on the front he reckoned they were quite quiet too
i belive Falken are something to do with DUNLOP

ok, have swapped front wheels with Kevin Wood. Will report in the a.m. when i've done my trip to work on roads i know. But so far there is less pulling on the steering wheel, it does not twist out of your hands like before. Far easier to drive you dont need to watch the road so much for fear that the car will drift/wonder off line. The rear is still lively, as you would expect.
The real proof will be when Kevin drives his car in the morning, see what he says, but i dont want the Falkens back. He can keep em ;D
;) thanks for your help once again Kev, much appreciated. :-)
-
That will be interesting. Did you tweak your power steering setting btw?
-
yes, box tweaked a while back, only a fraction though. Kevin felt his car had more box play than mine, but driving my car his first words where, "yeah, its not right is it"...
-
Does anyone rate the nankang tyres as being any good??
-
Use WIM for the Geo and tyre fitting , I wouldnt let anyone else near my Miggy but you really wont get a cheaper price for tyres than Camskill. Been there done that, now I just go to camskill for tyres then get WIM to fit them.
Just what I was thinking - I'd definitely go nowhere else for the geo setup. Can I ask how much WIM charges to fit tyres?
Tony has just replied to my email answering that very question........
£12.50+vat per corner
thats outrageous!!! i get them done for a £5'er a corner locally!!

the only thing nankangs are good for are exploits through a hedge or as a driftin/diffin tyres on spare rims! utter pish!!

What balancer do your local guys use?
-
one that balances wheels?? i dunno, never asked and ive never had an outta balance wheel from them and ive been going to him since i started driving....bought my first set of alloys off him actually!
hes even managed to balance slightly buckled alloys spot on too!
-
All good then, and at a good price, however from personal experience and that of some others on here, the only way to get rid of speed range vibration(say 75 to 85 mph) is to use a 5 stud balancer rather than a cone balancer which mounts the wheel in the centre hole. This has little relation to how the wheel bolts to the car.
Wim have invested in an automated tire changer to avoid wheel damage and 5 stud balancer, the only way to guarantee a truely balanced wheel ttbomk. If you had been to Wim you would know it is not a rip off.
But if your happy with your local fitter then fair enough.
-
fair enough my tyre guy uses the centre bore and i have to say ive never experienced this speed vibration.
my previous car was a VTi-S and i had new Goodyear Eagles fitted for a trackday with no problems....i got her to run off the clock at 145mph too with no vibration.
from what you say though, using a cone balancer must come down to the skill of the user...in which case hes pretty good!!
and the centre bore of the wheel, i fail to see how it has little relation as how it bolts to a car. if the hole on hte wheel is too small, it wont fit, if the hole in the wheel is too big then you get an awful vibration as the wheel moves very slightly on the studs (so my tyre fitter said, this comes from fitting wheels to an old car that had to have spigot rings fitted to elimate the vibration)
-
Well, did my usual commute today with chrisgixer's tyres on the front. Initial impressions were that there's a bit less weight to the steering meaning a little less feedback. More of a need to concentrate on the road rather then drive by feel although that may simply be due to a change in a setup I had got very used to.
Maybe it's very slightly more inclined to go wayward when hitting ruts and odd cambers but it's not as bad as I imagined it might be.
Overall grip is a little less than the SP Sportmax's meaning there's a tendency to understeer as the limit is approached. Ride is also a little harder, in fact I'm inclined to remove a couple of PSI of tyre pressure and re-evaluate them.

Yep all rings true really Kev, the ride is too firm due to higher pressure used to keep it straight, as you say. Try them at 32, which is the pressure i had been using. Then try to imagine your car with 2 rears as well giving the same feel.
Yours i think all fit in with what your saying, they are a little bit noisier with better grip, the ride with Dunlops is better than mine at 36 but not as good at 32. (Although your suspension is far better)
They feel more planted with a firmer more consistent feel at the steering wheel, which i think I mentioned to you as we left your house. This, i think, is the main key difference, esp re my issues.
There has been some reaction to road surface but nothing as drastic as the falkens, although the rear still pulls around as you would expect.
Interesting to see what happens when 2 new Dunlops are fitted and then i get the falkens back.
See how you go at 32psi Kev, should be....intersting.
