Title: Glovebox opening mechanism behind the handle?
Post by: mathewst on 29 March 2009, 20:53:52
Did anyone ever had a problem with this?
When I bought the car the handle was already broken so I ordered a new one. But it seems the mechanism isn't working properly.
I still didn't insert the new handle.
When I try the mechanism from the hole with my fingers the small lever (the one that holds the box closed) closer to the center of the dashboard extends and rectrats normally, but the outer one doesnt (actually extends but doesn't rectract).
I guess the spring inside the mechanism is broken or it fell off.
Did anyone had this kind of problem?
Can this mechanism be opened and  repaired?
Please if anyone knows help!!  :(

Remove the glovebox and unscrew the backing cover of the glovebox door to reveal the mechanism. It`s made of plastic so you should be able to see whether you can repair it or replace :y

Last but one pic shows the mechanism cover.

And one other question.
Anybody knows the size of the torx screwdriver needed for this?
I have a huge pile of tools but not this damn screwdriver so I'll have to buy it first.

The mechanism had snapped on my first Mig, I repaired it with tie wraps & a chopstick, there were none in scrappies then but it did the job a treat.  :y

As I thought the mechanism is broken.
The glovebox was a pain in the ... to get out and dismantle.
The mechanism itself is probably the worst piece of engineering I have ever seen. There's no way I'll buy a new one but have an idea how to repair it. If anyone else needs an advice someday Page Me and I'll gladly help out if I can
