Had a spare hour so stripped the plenum and other stuff off the car (its amazing how quick you can do things when you have already done it once)!!!
Got it stripped down to the point where I can see the oil cooler plate and all around it is filthy. Is it safe to use carb cleaner in this area (inlets are suitably filled with paper towel)?? Is there something else that might work better? :y

Filthy as in oily/damp or dirt?
if its dry maybe get the nozzle of a vacuum in there. You want to be careful blowing any rubbish around though.

Seems to be dry. I will get the vacuum in there to clear out debris but I want to clean all the surfaces whilst I am there.
