Title: 2003 03 Superb Vauxhall Omega 3.2 Manual
Post by: psg150 on 30 March 2009, 19:12:41
Not sure where to post this but looking at a lovely meggy described as above - only thing is, can't find info on 3.2 manuals, only autos. Where can I get technical data on these cars and are they generally any good??? I want to upgrade from my 2.5V6 (98) to something newer and this looks great.

So does that mean it will be:

i)  expensive to insure
ii) rubbish and thrashed to bits?

The spec is aircon, PAs electrics etc - will it be stupid quick?

it means its missing all its toys except maybe a CD Player Radio! and Alloy wheels i think all explods come with Climate control

but all the other toys are missing! with the value of omega's at the moment i would get a Nice 3.2 Elite or if you want a manual then a 2.6 Elite

Elite has all the toys Climate,SatNav (Usually but not all), Electric Memory Seats,Leather,Temperature Selectable Heated seats,Heated Mirrors,Auto Dip Mirrors,Xenon Lights,Rear Blind, and even more!

3.2 is 220 oddbhp with around 200lb/ft of tourqe

Im led to believe Police cars are test expempt and not all forces service there cars properly ive seen a few forces that send cars to auction with a service print out South Wales Police being one

It should be quick and no doubt it will have been thrashed, but show me a car in general circulation that hasn't...

Don't forget that the police service their cars regularly...

Generally, the plod ones have no performance enhancements engine wise, though the manual box will help acceleration slightly.  If it has an LSD (most plod manuals do, but not all), then that lowers gearing, hence even better acceleration.

BUT it is the same engine in retail MV6 or Elites.

Ex-plod cars are very basic specwise, generally slightly below GLS level.  The wiring may have been buggered about with, likely to be filled holes in roof, most likely will have suffered a few bumps in its life, and the engine pretty ragged.

not necessarily.

I know some forces service as per Vauxhall's schedule. And remember that Vauxhall schedule includes that stupid 20k oil inteval. So you may get a car driven hard with grit as lubrication...

and if it's been ragged, it probably won't be long before it needs another dual mass flywheel ...... and they're the best part of £1000 :o

I suppose, but mine has 150k and the engine is one of the quietest I've heard.  Maybe it's luck, but I'd like to think it's been because it was looked after.

Ok so I'm getting a no feeling (and I respect these opinions) The up side is that I could get it for less than £1.2k, 96k and cambelt done.

My other worry is that it is not standard issue, i.e 3.2 manual, it will be a pain to insure. Has anyone had experience in this?

Insurance shouldn't be a problem, and if you want a 3.2 manual, its your only option.

I'm suspicious of the mileage - check that further. Its 6yrs old, and plod will easily put on 40k per year... ...Omegas are desperately easy to clock, as they wear so well.

If you can live with the base spec, and are happy with playing with electrics, it may be your next car.  Not sure £1.2k is a great price though, but if genuine mileage and A1 condition....

What a steal!

Did anyone see the episode of Road Wars where the blue Omega pinned a little Jap hatchback up against a wall, the driver kept his foot to the floor and the clutch slipping and then when the clutch burnt out and the scrote limped away the driver gets out and boots the car! Not one of my favourite TV moments.

Me neither. I thought the Police trained their drivers?

200+BHP engine bouncing off the limiter and all the power going into the clutch. Don't need to be a rocket scientist to guess the outcome of that one! ;D

Should have been the car kicking him afterwards. tw't!

As many wise omega pundits have said on this site - ex police can be a minefield. I think a lot depends on the force that used the car - in my case the P.S.N.I. I have had no problems whatsoever with mine. Very frequently serviced - nearly 15 grand spent on it til it left service in early 07 with 115,000 miles. Body is very tidy, interior base spec of course but not unduly worn. Engine runs beautifully and uses no oil - pulls very strongly with a great sound. I'm sure it got driven hard but it is none the worse for it - indeed every mechanic I know says that most modern engines suffer from being driven too slowly. An absolute steal for 1500 quid!
