What are the duties, etc? I think that you have to pay VAT on the UK value of the car. What if you take it back out of the country after a few years? I'm pretty sure that you can only drive a car here for a year on a foreign registration. Can you take it to the continent first and save some that way?
Prices here are so silly here (not miggys) that I'd rather bring a car over from the states, and take it back in a few years.

Thanks, looks like SVA, 10% duty and VAT. Those last two add up to a lot! Now looking to see if I could get those back when taking the car back out of the country.

Bring a proper 'Yank Tank' over. Something with lots of chrome, cubes (there's no substitute for cubes! ;)), cylinders & big fins!
Wouldn't it be better financially to just sell it over here in Blighty rather than crate it back up to take back to the USA?

One temptation is a 5.4L Lincoln Navigator, go for under 5K in the states in pristine condition, but the fuel prices keep going up here. OTOH - 996T, V8 RS4 and others are 1/3rd cheaper in the states. Could take back or sell when I leave. Not a lot of help if I have to pay 30% in taxes to get it here though. >:(

If memory serves me correctly.. you get nothing back when you "re-export" a vehicle ... you only avoid all the VAT etc if you export it BEFORE registration.. but I could be wrong :(

:-/ I pass one each day going to & from work. It's been dis-tastefully modified with every bit of chrome bling you can think of.
I was thinking more along the lines of classic Yank Tank :- Is the import duty the same on a classic?
