Dont know if anyone else has the same problem with theirs, but my car has covered 110,000 miles, and seems to smoke a bit, would you say the piston rings are fried or is there anything else to check first. The car has always been looked after, and oil never seems to move.Any ideas.
-
What colour is the smoke and when does it occur? :-?
I doubt its the piston rings or you would be losing lots of oil.
-
Mainly noticeable during tickover, and the colour is bluey/white.Could it possibly be stem seals.
-
Could be. As the smoke is blue/white it is obviously oil related, but you said its not using much oil, which makes me think it probably is a head problem rather than block problem. Have you checked for signes of head gasket trouble?
-
Head gasket failure is very rare on V6 engines (unless you have allowed it to overheat).
Check coolant for signs of oil contamination (dip your finger in and see if it feels greasy and smell it to see if it smells a bit petrolly). Could be oil cooler on its way out. Mine has just gone and mine seemed to smoke a little more at tickover just before. Mine was white smoke though not blue.

Ive had valve stem seals/guides go in the past
if this is the case you usually get smoke on deceleration as the buterfly in the intake is shut but the engine is still trying to take in air & sucks oil down the inlet guides
hope this is of some help

Thanks a lot folks for the help, will see how it goes.

Stem seals were problematic on the early DBW V6s. What year is it?
Having said that, if most of the colour is white and there isn't an oil consumption problem it's probably condensation.
If you shut it down after a good run does it smoke worse from cold the following day (bearing in mind condensation will be worse when cold)?
