Title: best replacement exhaust
Post by: batmobile on 06 April 2009, 11:04:43
Need to repalce the exhaust on 3.2 f/l estate, centre boxes l and r and back box. Which is the best make and which is best to avoid. Want it to be as near standard as possible, so no fancy stuff.  Have access to T/C card so is it worth getting the genuine Vx bits and fitting myself?  Recommendations please...

If you can do it then I would with genuine Vx parts! :y

Failing that I personally use a very good local specialist tyre and exhaust outfit, who have done that type of work for me for years, to fit whatever (Vx) parts I specify. ;)

sadly Vx exhausts is not the way to go anymore. They used to give decent qauility but now they seam no better than elcheapo patterns costing £130 cat back.

Its either elcheapo route (£130), or stainless (£350-£400)

FYI I bought an Eternal system for my 3.2 estate.  It required surgery to fit(2" off one pipe) to fit.  Also its a bit short at the back end.

However it cost about £120 and sounds reasonable - bit of a deep burble - so no complaints.

Try to avoid Vauxhall exhausts.
I'm not so sure for Omegas (mine exhaust is still ok but don't know did the previous owner changed it), but my friend had a Vectra and the exhaust (last section) lasted for app 15000 miles. He always went mad than at the end fitted a Remus at the back.
Try some brand name models or find a local exhaust manufacturer (they turned up to be more durable than the original parts and a hell of a lot cheaper).

I note the above aversion to Vx exhausts, but I have had them on my cars for the last 20 years and never found them a  problem.  This included cars that did over 100k from new in 18 months, and on cars like the Senator and my first miggy that covered 30-40k a piece on one set of Vx exhausts. :D ;)

I think the problem with many motorists is they do too many short runs and thus the exhaust systems continually hold too much moisture / water.

Therefore I would agree that stainless steel exhaust systems are problem the best overall for all motorists aiming to keep their cars for any length of time. 8-) 8-)

As Tunnie states, the latest VX Omega exhausts are no better than cheapo pattern ones now unless you can find a dealer who has some old stock.

For the same / better quality as the original the only option is to go for a stainless system from a reputable manufacturer such as 'longlife'.

I agree Lizzie that sometimes the original part is the best one.
As I said I'm not sure for Omega exhaust quality but on Vectra they are catastrophic!! ( 3 rear sections of exhaust in 60 000 km).
I had an Audi 2.5tdi before omega and it did 240 000 km in 15 years and the exhaust was still working without a single problem)
Also had a bmw which I bought from a friend with a Remus replacement part (covered a lot of miles and exhaust broke only after hiting a sidewalk).

Well that is what I have always believed, but judging from the comments by Tunnie and VXL, who have experienced differently with Vx exhausts, it seems the quality of those has dramatically reduced recently. :o :o

A great shame! :'( :'(

Yup!

Sorry guys Vx exhausts are not what they used to be, I have one of the last propper ones, what went on was the exact same shape and design it replaced.

HOWEVER Vx now just seam to ship cheapo crappy Tin ones, which are no better than pattern.

I would strongly advise against Vx exhausts now

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

We can certainly build a Stainless Steel Exhaust for your Vaux Omega.

All our systems are tailor-made using stainless steel (T304) and come with a no hassle, fully transferable LIFETIME GUARANTEE so it is literally fit and forget.

Our free-flow systems are designed for efficiency, which can give increased power and improved MPG. Usually the most noticeable improvement is in low down torque giving better acceleration.

Every system comes with a choice of our standard tailpipes, and we have an extensive range of tailpipe upgrade options, so you can choose the finish that's exactly right for you and your car! And because our systems are custom built, you are able to tell us how you would like the car to sound, anywhere from quiet to full sport. The most popular choice is Mild Sport, which gives a slight note when you accelerate, but without being intrusive.

To design and build a Longlife Stainless Exhaust system from the Cat Back through to the rear of your vehicle would cost £447.35 (including fitting and VAT).This would come with a standard twin 3” tail pipe design.

Hand-building and fitting your custom made system takes approximately 4 hours by appointment at our Local centre in Rainham, Essex.

We also offer a wide range of other products and services such as MOT, Wheels, Tyres, Alignment, Brakes, Suspension and ICE, we can also offer a very competitive finance package so your payments could be spread over 28months of all your work.

When you arrive and before work commences, we will agree and confirm the final details of the system design. After work is completed, every exhaust undergoes a thorough twelve point quality check, to ensure complete reliability and performance.
Please call me on 01708 527 220, to book an appointment or discuss your requirements further.

I look forward very much to hearing from you soon.
