Title: Air con radiator fans
Post by: amba on 08 April 2009, 09:36:15
Is it possible to remove and replace the 2 air con radiator fans without a complete front end strip down,as I think I have a very worn bearing in one of mine and needs to be fixed soon.

might make it easier if you remove rad & aircon condenser

Was hoping I could get away without needing to remove air con rad as will then require refill.
Wasn,t sure if you could get enough access from below and through space left with front grille removed.
Sounds like a bearing is giving up in the R/H fan motor..loud screeching, have tried a dose of wd40 but must be totally sealed unit.

.. and, while you're here, amba06128, regarding the slightly smaller air con fan, I haven't forgotten about it. I will pull my finger out and get it sorted.  ;)

You can change just the motors with the fans attached, you need a E10 torxs type socket to undo the 3 screws, then just withdraw the motor and fan blades from the surround after unplugging the connector. The clip that holds the connector also unclips from the surround so you can pass the plug through the surround.

I can provide pictures if required

Bumper off helps a lot

Pictures to help explain

Remove grill, bumper etc and air intake pipe so it looks like this...

Then you can get at the fans. (This part is shown on fans removed from the car, obviously you are trying to avoid this)

Remove the 3 E10 headed bolts holding the fan to the surround
(Fan removed for picture clarity... you can get to the bolts without doing this)

Disconect the plug at this point and remove the clip pictured from the surround to aid passing the plug through the surround and cut the cable tie holding the wire

Remove fan from surround

(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7933/p4083887.jpg) (http://img5.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p4083887.jpg)

Reverse of fan

(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/77/p4083888.jpg) (http://img5.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p4083888.jpg)

Replace with new fan and reasemble car  ;)

At no point do you need to remove aircon rad etc...
