Title: Oil Change Info Urgnetly Required
Post by: star_whites on 10 April 2009, 14:41:28
Can anyone tell me if the whole canister is supposed to unscrew on a 3.0 V6 1999.

Its the first time ive carried out a oil change on my 3.0 since I bought it and am unsure if there is a cap that uncrews or if the whole canister unscrews from the engine. I know its the cannister type and have got under with a 24mm ring spanner and have managed to get it to move with the assistance of a few taps from a hammer but the whole assembly is turning.

Anyone whos changed one of these please let me know otherwise I will have to put the clean oil in without changing the filter  >:(

I take it that it does unscrew anticlockwise?

If it does whats the best way of loosening it off so I can remove the cap without damaging the canister??

You might be able to wiggel the main housing off so you can get it in a vice and work round the poor workmanship of which ever incompitent monkey was there before you.

The housing is secured by a large bolt assembly inside the housing.

Thanks for the info but in the end not required!  :y

I managed to use a oil filter strap remover on the casing and a 24mm ring spanner on the cap and got it undone and a jacket arm full of red hot black (almost as black as crude) oil  ;D

As it was red hot I think I will have got most of the crap out but decided to just put a cheap 10/40 in for 500 miles instead of the vx oil I just bought. Will change it again in two/three weeks and put the genuine vx filter and oil in. Then a change every 2500 miles up to 10000 to give it a really good clean.

It already sounds much quieter and appears to be running smoother, job well done I think  8-) :y
