Hello guys, finally got leaky oil cooler sorted this week after Mig had been sitting for a fortnight feeling sorry for itself :'(. Did full oil and filter change, let her idle a little to warm, took her round the block then dipped and topped her up nicely. Jobs a good`un - or so i thought. 2 miles into a trip to the beach started hearing a ticking noise from engine. Pulled up for a look - definite loud metallic ticking coming from the top end, regular and rises with revs. And now it idles lumpy as crap. TBH i dont want to drive any further till i get to the bottom of it. Could it be oil starvation at the top end? Any suggestions welcome guys :y Really hoping its not terminal this time. :'( :'(

I assume the oil light went out?
It does sound like oil starvation to me too.
-
Yep, oil light out, everything running sweet, till the noises and the rough running. :-/ :-/
-
Is it diesel knocking?

Is it diesel knocking?
It could well be TB, but it seems louder and maybe only one cylinder? What would symptoms be - or have i already described them :-[. Are there knock sensors on this lump the same as petrol v6? Really not sure where to start on diesels - great when they work, pulling hair out when they dont!! :(
-
if it appears to be only one cylinder, would be a good bet its a hydraulic lifter, oil flush new oil, and some wynns valve lifter additive usualy works, but it needs a good thrashing to get it all in there straight after i did a very fast thrash from oxford to swindon !!!! had similar on mine first few thousand i had it did this and its never returned although when cold its always a bit clattery once its warm it is very quiet

Is it wise to use flushing oil in a diesel? Heard a couple of tales saying it makes things worse. Also not sure i want to rev too high as its quite a new and worrying noise to me!
:-/

lol revving up is yor choice i cznt hear the noise, however flushing is a must for cleaning ask the boy! its what cured his overheating problems on his tractor, I do mine at least once every 15k!!

Well if its good enough for TheBoy, its good enough for me!! I`ll report back any progress :y :y

If the car has had a history of poor oil servicing - and most have - then a flush can be a very worthwhile exercise. I know what you mean about the dangers of flushing, but sometimes it is worth the risk, as a lot of the small oilways in the TD can start to clog.
I recommend that stuff that Omegatoy got me, reckon it would strip the paint off the bodywork, but follow the instructions to the letter! Follow that with a quickish oil change (say after 100miles or so), then put in the lifter treatment.

I think with the regular oil changes that yours and my old tractor - which I miss - get, subsequent flushing is probably not necessary :y
