Title: Back of the car sitting very high!
Post by: belldarr on 11 April 2009, 16:31:19
Hi - Just noticed that the rear of my car looks like it has risen to full height - guessing that the self leveling suspension is fully up - is this a faulty sensor??

I did replace the front discs last week and had the front of the car jacked up and axle stands underneath but it was fine when I put everything back together and back on the floor - the rear seems to have risen slowly throughout the week...

Regards

Darren

Are they the same as the headlamp sensors??
Do they suffer the same fate, ie- sieze up and pop out the joint??

The sensor is combined into levelling ECU, and no, not same as headlight sensors.

If you sit with ign on, but engine not running, is there a compressor noise from osf wing (petrol) or underneath at back (2.5TD), and if so is it on all the time?

Check the ball joints haven't popped off the sensor.

No the compressor doesn't run all the time, I know the noise you mean, had a quick look under there this afternoon and couldn't see anything obvious.  I will have to get under there tomorrow for a good look.

Ok - just had a look under the rear of the car and think I have found the box of tricks that tells the compressor how much air it needs - I can hear the compressor run for a few seconds when I start the car so thats ok (normal) I have also slackened off one of the small ball joints that connects the unit to the radius arm and it all moves freely enough - have tried setting the arm that is connected directly to the rear of the box of tricks in the most upright position and then the most downward - but the car is still as high as it can be whe i try the arm in both positions.

Am I fiddling with the right bit?

does this unit usually fail?

Anyone have any idea if they are easy to get hold of if this is indeed the fault?

Any help much appreciated as I dont fancy driving the car while it is so "jacked up" at the rear.

Cheers
