Title: autobox question
Post by: omegav6est on 12 April 2009, 23:26:15
hi all
car is 2.5 v6 auto and the symptoms are this, normal driving is not such a problem but as soon as i start to go up an incline no matter how steep the car will drop down a gear, for example driving along on the flat at say 50 mph road starts to incline and straight away the car drops down a gear with no more pressure on the accelerator, i expect this  as the hill gets steeper but not as soon as the road starts to climb, also noticed again at say 40-50 mph on the flat and accelerating gently the car will change down a gear at the slightest of pressure applied to the accelerator.gear changes are smooth with no clonking or jerking and no slipping and kickdown works as it should.checked fluid today and indeed it did need a litre to top it up but the outside of the  box is dry no leaks at all. i did change the front oil seal about 6000 miles ago and clean oil was used to refil and the fluid that ran out the filler today was still red and not smelly.however i have used normal atf both when changing the oil seal 6 thou ago and today to top up and untill a few days ago the box was performing perfectly.could this be a vaccum problem?im told the gear change process works off vaccum

gear change is not vac, but hydraulic.  On these, if the box is changing gear, its intentional, as the ecu controls it.  The later software may help this a bit, as a more evolved map.  Bear in mind that 50mph type speeds, you can expect a change down, esp on the smaller engines, as the map knows the engine won't have the torque...
