The V6 estate started running rough last week.......DIS pack faulty (on 4 cylinders).
Fitted new dis pack and its now running on 5 cylinders
Anyway, did a compression test to find it low on number 3 cylinder so off with the inlet and cam covers.
Now the heads are VERY clean, as if they have been re-built at some point possibly following cam belt failure?
Well, which ever idiot cleaned and re-built them has done a shit job........they clearly didn't replace the valve stems as one has cracked and the inlet valve is stuck open. Its must have been 'professionally' done as the heads have been chemically cleaned.
What a Muppet, so its heads off time an fit a spare pair.
Moral.....never, despite what any body else tells you, replace only the valves following cam belt failure.....it wont work and is dam right stupid.....
-
so how much time to you think that will take you to put right Mark?
-
knwoing Mark, about an hour ;D
-
Started re-building a pair of heads already but, they are filthy.....they have had an additive in the oil ...

Sorry to hear that, it seems like a traditional main dealer cost saving approach to a problem.
See the positive side that now you can get everything serviced, relap valves, port heads, etc.
-
ex plod ain't it? Do you reckon it was bodged during its police life, or afterwards?
-
It was most likely done during its police life due to the cost (private owner would be unlikely to pay that amount).
Annoying, but at the end of it Mark will have an engine even he is satisfied with! ;)
-
I like the way removing the heads and re-fitting them is no big deal for Mark ;D It was a bl00dy big job for me!!
Does sound like a bodge, i got mine right down to a tee, although now my manifold bolts have worked loose and it's blowing and i feel like the torching the bloody thing >:(
-
Lol....head gaskets are not to bad a job on the V6
The plus point is the exhaust manifold gaskets needed changing anyway!
-
Well make sure you use new exhuast manifold bolts, or do the current one's up nice and tight ;)
-
Taking the heads off won't be such a big deal really. Once you have the plenum, inlet manifold and cams out, it is reasonably easy. Just a pain to have to do. Luckily we happen to have a spare set of 3.0 heads, which are in great condition, so he can get this sorted quickly I hope.

To avoid bolt relaxation you need either multi stage torqueing or you need to check the spec of the bolt and give it the maximum it can take, eg if it is an M8 8.8 grade the maximum is arround 28NM. In any gasketed joint bolt relaxation occurs after so many themral cycles.

Not had much time to work on the lump today as we have been out to the local kite festival.....
Did manage to get the heads off though..............and this is a shot of the little bugger....

You should just be able to see a section of valve guide on the valve stem, the other piece has been through the engine and knocked a few dents into the head face and the piston crown.
The ones on the piston crown are not to bad and there appears to be no bore damage so I will polish them out.
-
On closer inspection it looks like one of the other inlet valves has also been leaking slightly.
The spare heads are being stripped and new stems seals will be fitted following a good clean and valve re-grind.
Then its assemble and fit, should be running late Saturday afternoon.
In the mean time its bus and train for me to work which, is actulay nice because its different but, it does cost more! ;D
-
Ok, one head stripped and cleaned, valves cleaned and checked, valves lapped in.
Now need my headgasket set to turn up (82 quid with bolts delivered) so I can fit the new stem seals and re-assemble ready for fitting.
If it doesn't arrive today then head number two will be stripped and cleaned as per above.....
-
Teh Elite is still available if you change your mind mate.
-
Thanks for the kind offer MrMcB but I am now getting a lift of Matchless.
Head gasket and bolt set has just arrived, very good delivery service and looks to be a good set.
Will post some pics of the assembled head tonight.
-
One head almost finished (bit of final checking and ancillaries to attach). Shown here following re-fit of the valves, springs, new stem seals and Colet's and under going the good old paraffin leak test.

Agreed
-
Right....two heads stripped, cleaned, new stem seals, valves cleaned and lapped in, faces checked for flatness, exhaust manifolds checked and flattened (one was warped) then fully re-assembled ready to fit.....

So tomorrow is assembly morning.......then 15 minutes of followers tapping like buggery!
-
Very impressive!! Your car is going to be like new when you've done!!
You going to offer yourself a warranty? ;D
-
The heads for yours are also getting the same treatment......

Cheers!!! :) :) :) :) I can't wait to get back to driving a real car.
Have to start sorting out the logistics i.e: bacon butties, tea or coffee and what beers to ply you all with ;)
-
All fitted.....6 hours work (had a few additinal bits to sort as I went).
One major hitch.....one of the heads bolts didn't have a washer....so Laidback kindly went to Vardys .....but they had none in stock (which I cant beleave!) so it was a trip to Derby.
Staretd first time and was a bit ticky to start (lifters fillign with oil)......quitened down after about 5 mins and its runs VERY well.......it realy is super smooth.
Last remaining job is to sort one of the manifold studs out (will do it during the week)
-
I'm afraid I just wouldn't have the patience. Good job, Mark [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Well done mate :D
-
Its the smoothest V6 I have heard in a while....might have to do the 2.5.....now wheres that head gasket kit!
-
That's good news,
it should give you trouble freemiles for the rest of its life now. Did you do anything special to the lifters by the way?

Yeah, you haven't heard my MV6 for a while... ;) ;D

Yes...I inserted them into a vice (with the jaws protected) and very gently pushed the plunger in to expel the old oil (with the fill hole facing down). Repeated this several times to remove all of the old black oil.
Then did the Matchless trick of putting them into a pot of oil and pumping them until the air stops coming out of the hole.
You could then repeat this a few times but, I didn't need to.
They quitenened down pretty quickly and are now mega quiet.
-
Good work sir :)
-
I never doubted you for a minute mate. Top job. [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]
-
Well done m8 ;)
-
Got to fix an exhaust manifold to front pipe stud though......will perhaps do it tomorrow evening.

Nice!!!
I would like one day to listen to that engine. ;)
