Does the compressor still run when the eco mode is on..I know the clutch doesn,t engage so air is not being conditioned, but I have got a high pitched scream when the clutch engages which is almost certainly the bearings on there way out.but have also got a noise when on eco so just curious if the compressor is still working when no clutch engaged

In a word NO, the clutch should disengage with the ECO on.
-
So if the clutch disengages does any part of the compressor continue to rotate driven by the drive belt ?
-
Only the outer ring that the aux belt sits on.
-
If the A/C clutch is on its' way out it's entirely possible that the bearing beween the pulley and the compressor shaft is noisy when the clutch is disengaged. :y

The usual compressor noise is from the pulley bearing, it is rotating regardless of whether AC is on or off. With AC on the clutch disk is clamped to the pulley which helps support the pulley slightly and so changes the noise.
You can fit a belt from a 2.0 +AC and bypass the AC pulley if its really bad.
There's not enough room to extract the clutch with the compressor installed....pipes get in the way.

Thanks for info guys....strange thing is the compressor was replaced almost 2 years ago when major air con work was done...that only lasted about 11 months as the compressor started making a lot of noise when engaged and my aircon man replaced it under warranty.
It now sounds like the 2nd compressor is on its way out as when engaged it does cool the air but makes a horrible screeming noise which emmediately goes when ECO is switched on..so for last couple of days have beeen using car with eco permantly on.
I have also noticed a strange noise when driving and can only put it down to compressor, hence my question about moving parts within unit when clutch dissengaged.
To start with I thought it was exhaust or rear wheeel bearings, but am almost certain it is from left hand front(air con compressor area)so looks like unit number 3 is on its way..must have been a very poor quality batch my guy used before.

Hi,
It seems probable to me that when you had the initial failure 2 years ago, so minute pieces of a broken compressor got into your system, and have been circulating in the system and would seem to have wrecked the second warranty compressor, and now by the sound of it the third.
This crud is extremely difficult to flush out of the system. It is usual to fit a special filter on the compressor input line in cases of replacement of mechanically failed compressors.

Not being a drama queen, but just a warning if the compressor is going:
I have stated before on the oof, I had a compressor that failed and jammed the whole engine (3.0 Elite)! :o :o
That was expensive! :'( :'(
-
Lizzie...did you have any warning of the impending failure...mine started making a strange noise about 2 weeks ago and I couldn,t trace it...then by chance I pressed the ECO button on dash and it went away.
If I start engine without eco on I get a really high pitched screeming which also has a rumble intermitent with it..when eco switched on it goes...but last few days have also noticed a noise when driving even with eco switched on..hence my original question about compressor running even with air con switched off.
I have reported fault to my air con man who has said he will speak to his supplier and find out if any other failures with this pump have been reported...so even though this is now the second unit I am still expecting a FOC replacement when it gets round to it..in the meantime I am not running air con ..just eco..will report back when resolved.
Incidentally the guy is a proper Air con engineer so expect he would have fuly emptied and flush system last time as original failure was a leaking unit.

No, that was the strange part about it! ::) There was no warning. I drove up to Manchester to see my youngest brother, but when I went to go home the engine would not turn a fraction! :o :o Had to be AA relayed home >:(
There had been no sounds at all leading up to all that.

So did the compressor seize solid and the drive belt broke?

No Amba, thank god, but it still all cost me over £1,000 :'( :'(

That sounds painfull..1k just to be cool...if my memory serves me correctly I paid out 550 for ne w compressor/evaporator and regass when it was first done 2 years ago...expensive things aircon..but I will be sticking to my case on this even though it is 2 years ago as warranty was done once and failed again...just curious about seizing of pump and belt being thrown off.

Yes it was Amba, but I had bought the car (then 3 years old) only two years before for £11,000 so in context it was a worthwhile repair. ;) ;)

Bit like me then Lizzie,as I really like the car even though it was 8 yeras old when bought and the air con out lay for me was nearer 30% of the price paid..but had planned keeping it for 4 years so just under 2 years left for me .

Indeed, in that situation I believe it is worth doing on these beloved cars! :-*8-) 8-) We need to keep them going all the time they are economically viable! 8-) 8-)
