Title: Tyre sizes
Post by: Nickbat on 15 April 2009, 14:29:49
I will soon need new boots on my 2.6CD. At the moment I appear to have Michelin Primacy 225-65 R16 Vs all round. These came with the car. However, the unused spare is a Firestone 205-65 R16 V. How come it's different, I wonder?

So, 225 or 205? Which is right?

The spare will be an R15 not an R16....

You're right, Mark. One of these days you are going to be wrong about something...perhaps.  ;) ;D ;D ;D

So, my spare is a 205-65 R15 and I have 225-65 R16s at each corner. When I get a quote for 4 new tyres which do I ask for, 205s or 225s?

I'm not sure why you recommend the 55 (tyre height/aspect) rather than the 60. Would it make for a better ride/handling?

225/55-16s are the proper size , and you'll find that 60s and especially 65s will throw your speedo out by a fair bit :).

225 is the tyre width.
55 or 65 is the height of the sidewall expressed as a percentage of the width.
15 or 16 is the wheel rim diameter.
When the whole tyre size sum is calculated out to a diameter or a rolling circumference, the change various sizes/percentages interplay on each other.

All explained here:
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
with a good calculator to compare tyre and rim sizes further on.....  ;)

Avon/cooper are good boots to and don't cost the earth on coopers you get a very high comprehensive cover of customer satisfaction ie if you damage one buy going up a cub for example it will be changed for free you just pay for valve re-balance etc and this lasts for 2 years no questions asked :y

I've heard of Avon tyres but not Avon/Cooper. I'll do a Google search.

BTW, Mark recommended a W rating. Would a V rating be sufficient? I don't drive that fast these days. ;)

AFAIK it doesn't matter what speed you drive at.. the tyres must be suitable for the speeds the car can do ... so the makers specifications must be fitted or the insurers can refuse payouts in the event of an incident ... :(

Page 166 of

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.reynolds983/Manuals/Omega2002Manual.pdf

Gives the ratings

Pages 218, 219 give the performance figures

IMHO the 2 must match ..

The information on those pages implies that a V rated tyre .. 150 Mph is suitable as the top speed is less   :)

You can use this to calculate the different sizes :y.

With Nickbats current setup his speedo is approx. 5 MPH SLOW[/b][/u] :-?.

Aha! So that's why I haven't had a NIP for a while!  ;) ;D

Thanks for the info, guys.  :y

NO :o

if you have been driving around with 225/65/16's rather than the stock size of 225/55/16 then your speedo is 6.9% TOO SLOW i.e. at a reading of 60mph on your speedo you are actualy doing 64.1mph :exclamation.

Personaly i have 225/50/16's on mine for reduced tyre wall roll and that fact that the speedo over reads by 3.4% so at 60 i'm really only doing 57.9mph (kinder on my licence ::))

edit:

50 profile tyres are marginaly cheaper as well because 225/55/16 is quite an uncommon size.

guess that 225/65/16's are cheaper still ::)

I must apologise to Nickbat, you're quite right H/elite it makes his speedo under(going faster than speedo shows) not over as i put the wrong tyre in the calculator 1st :-[.
