How do

Hi All, I have purchased an SKF cam belt kit from Auto Vaux and have fitted the belt pulleys and have then tried to align the marks on the cam belt with the corresponding notches on each pulley - as per Mark's DVD.
I have then aligned the 2 white lines to the crankshaft pulley then guide the belt around cam pulleys 1 and 2 aligning each white mark to each pulley notch apparently with no problem. Then when I get to align Cams 3 and 4 there are no white marks anywhere near!!!
On this Gates belt, there are also 2 Yellow crank shaft marks. If I align these with the crankshaft pulley, I then am able to line a yellow mark to cams 1 and 2 notches, guiding the belt around to cam pulleys 3 and 4, I can then successfully align a white mark with each pulley notch.
Question I have is, is this OK? It all appears to look exactly as per Mark's video with the exception that I have yellow alignment marks on the crank pulley, yellow alignment marks on pulleys 1 and 2, and white alignment marks on pulleys 3 and 4!!

Has anybody else come across this with Gates belts and can anyone possibly provide me with some advice please!!!

Cheers,

Mel.

Simple question....does the belt fit with little slack any where?

If so then it hould be fine.

Hi Mark.
The belt fits fine, and seems to be OK. I have not yet tried a rotation simply because I thought I ought to seek advice first.

Shall I try rotating and see if all still aligns?

Have you ever come across this issue before?

Cheers,

Mel.

Yes, you are OK. I had this exact same problem with an SKF kit from Autovaux; went ahead and aligned yellow marks with the crankshaft pulley and cams 1 & 2, then white marks with cams 3 & 4, and everything was fine.

As mentioned by Marks DTM, provided the belt is tight with no slack and your tensioners are set, then you'll be OK.

Some of the Vauxhall Belts dont have any marks on them at all mate. If you work one way, I always go anti clockwise from the Crank, over the roller, then over the top of Cam 4, then 3, under the centre roller, over Cam 2, then 1, then if you have the belt with no slack it should just go over the Tensioner. If for instance your a tooth out between the Crank and Cam 4 it will be difficult to get the belt over the Tensioner plus the roller under Cams 3&4 wont be able to take enough slack out of the belt.

Hope this makes sense

iirc the marks wont line up again after a rotation, they are just for roughly getting the initial timing.

Its locking tool only to check once youve gone round once.

You have timed and tensioned it haven't you?  Sorry if its obvious but best to ask before you rotate it..

Yes I bought a cam locking kit, and have timed and tensioned it as per Mark's video.

I have since rotated the crankshaft about ten times (!) and the marks on the cams align perfectly with the guage when at TDC.

Have completely re-assembled.

I am charging the battery now (as it went flat - been off road for several weeks now) and will try it in the morning.

Thanks for all your help - it really makes me feel 'not alone' while doing this work!

Cheers.

My cambelt kit came from Autovaux aswell, and was skf rollers with gates belt.

Interestingly the belt had white and yellow marks but i aligned all the white ones and everything timed up fine (took about 8 goes though of me being a perfectionist :-[)

Well started the old girl up today and she fired up first time and runs smoothly!!

Will take her out tomorrow to treat her to some new tyres.

All my worries seem to fade away....I was as nervous as a kitten before I tried starting her up...but plucked up the courage..

Once again many thanks...hopefully good for another 40k. She has done 84k and is a super driver.

cheers. ;D ;D ;D
