Title: Unusual fault?
Post by: bconnelly on 20 April 2009, 21:09:26
Hi.

It may be coincidence but after getting two new front tyres fitted I was driving along the motorway when the ABS and TC lights came on, at the same time the speedo needle dropped to zero and the power steering seemed to cut out. This now happens randomly for between 5 minutes to 20 minutes but usualy corrects itself eventually. Any ideas guys?

seeing as they messed with front wheels, check wiring to sensors.

My gut reaction is shafted ecu though  :'(

if their circumferences are different this also can cause problems on ABS.. its a known fact..

Yup - check the tyre sizes on the front match those on the back. If not, then one set will be turning faster than the other, thus knocking the sensors and ECU's out. Happened to me a while ago after a visit to Kwik-Bodge.

Doesn't cause loss of speedo/pas though normally, just brings on the lights  :-/

Classic ABS ECU ... been there got the t-shirt ... AFAIK you have 3 options ..

New from Vx ... around £500-600 .. :(
Get yours repaired ... £130-£150
Get one from a breaker ...

If you want to get a decent quote for the repair option .. bba-reman did mine and I was very pleased with the service.

01634 687222 .. worth a phone call at least.

Changing it is a bugger .. most folks seem not to put all the bolts back in !!  Several threads on this in the past ..

Seems i've given you guys a real puzzler  ;). Tyres are the same as the rear and I cant see any fuses blown. The guy doing the tyres had to use a big hammer to remove the locking wheel nuts as the key broke but he didnt appear that rough. Nothing simple ever happens to me  :'(

Have a good look at the front speed sensors and brake back plate, they may have dislodged the sensor when refitting the wheels

No puzzler - classic signs of abs ecu failure mate.
Options as outlined by Entwood above.
I went second hand option - if you go this way make sure you get exact same part nş as yours, and if possible from exact same model or else will require Tech2 reprogramming.  Part Nş is helpfully underneath!!!  Expect to pay £40-£50 for a good used one.

Good luck with it :-? ;)

if tyres are the same size then there appears some serious bill in the horizon..

Before I go spending on a new ABS ECU, would this also cause the power steering to fail as it does at exactly the same time?

Cheers

Power steering, Speedo, ABS, TC all get information from the ABS ECU related to speed of the vehicle.

The ECU failing is taking away that speed information .. so your steering goes heavy, your speedo stops, and the TC/ ABS lights come on.

IMHO classic ABS ECU problem ... it is EXACTLY what I had on the old miggy .. fixed by the bbs-reman repair  :)
