Hi All,
I might have the chance to work abroad for a couple of years and I'm thinking of storing my Mig rather than sell it... :)
Apart from disconnecting the battery, what should I do to ensure its going to be OK when I need it again?
Many Thanks in advance :y :y

Ideally get it inside, remove plugs and a drop of Light oil down the wells, remove wheels and lay flat and obviously, remove battery.
TBH, is it actually worth storing it? with the current prices I can't see it being worth it IMHO :y :y
-
Well, to be honest its with prices in mind that I'm thinking of storing it, as I've got a garage where I can keep it for free.
As you say its not worth much, but I'll have a decent car when i get back! :y
-
i would be tempted to store mine if i worked abroad, after all its barely worth 4 figures, be lucky to get £800 for mine now which is nothing.
If you can store for free, why not! 8-)
-
Thats exactly what I'm thinking Tunnie, save all the hassle of buying another when I get back!! :y
I've come back from working abroad before, despretly needing wheels and bought a pile of you know what!! :( ;D

If your going to store it then full wash and dry and a coat of wax all over, just before you put it in the garage on blocks or axle stands to stop the tyres from squaring off, do a complete oil and filter change to stop the contaminants in the old oil from causing the bottom end to corrode, clean out inside and put a few satchets silica gel? the stuff that absorbs damp(cant remember what its called )doh!! worst case tho is if its an auto, normal proceedure to store an auto box is to fill it brimful of auto fluid to stop the clutch bands drying out at the top and destroying themselves when you start to use it again, as no dipstick on the omega ones not to sure how you can brim it ? certainy you can over fill it but dont know how your going to know how far up it is?
fill or a least squirt all locks with as much grease as you can get in there(motorbie chain lube is good for this as it comes out a liquid and then reverts to grease when its solvents disperse, designed to get in the links but of course it gets in everywhere you use it!! dont forget the ignition lock, try to make sure the garage is well ventilated to allow any moisture left on car underneath to dry off so the car wont sweat or condensate in there, :y

some good info there.
if i was going to be working abroad i'd want to store mine aswell.
I agree with the oil change, silica gel, standing on axle stands, and giving the car a good going over.
Even if some of the stuff sounds like a little overkill, you know that when you come home, that your car will be in a mint condition.
-
That is perfect advice... Silica Gel is something I hadn't thought of ::) ::) ::)
I agree... If storage is free then do it :y :y :y

glad you approve guys its what i used to do with my MK11 Zodiac convertible, when the show season was over for its winter hibernation!!,
did it every time and never had a problem with anything on it by the way one thing i forgot was if you have an electric ariel put it up and oil the stem then put it back down to keep it free from sticking

How about one of these (http://www.carcoon.co.uk/)?

Nice idea Andy, but my cars not worth much more than that!! ;D ;D ;D
I think a few old bed sheets will do the trick!! :y :y :y
-

I'd meant to add a few .. ;) ;) ;) ;) .... but didn't :-[. You never know, we might very well see a few Omegas ( I don't drive a bl00dy Mig! :-? I weld with one ;)) instead of Mk II Jags etc in them one day! ..... as long as all the modern day electrickery holds out! ;) ;) :y :y

You don't read Practical Classics etc ...... ;)
-
If I don't come back, it may get discovered in years to come as a rare vintage classic!! :D ;D :D ;D
-
I assume it's an Auto? If manual, you will need to wedge the clutch pedal down. Make sure you leave the handbrake off too. :y
