No NO NO NO NO......
You have to service it properly.
Only monkeys and mechanics who dont understand how these things work piss about with handbrake cables (in-correctly) to adjust such things (on any cars!).

Not a pet hate, it just right royally pisses me off that there is this incorrect view that to adjust a handbrake you attack the cable!
You then get statements like 'the hadbrakes on these are crap' when in reality its the operative thats crap!

I don't think they have the best handbrakes in the world - certainly the least effective handbrake I've ever had on any car I've owned. That said, its the heaviest car I've owned, and, correctly adjusted, it is absolutely more that capable of doing its primary role.
It just takes a hell of effort on it to perfrom a 1 point turn in a narrow road, and not something I can consistently do in the Omega.
-
..... to perfrom a 1 point turn in a narrow road. ....
= handbrake turn? :-/
but as you suggest, its primary role is a handbrake to hold an already stopped car. :y :y :y

adjusting the shoes thou the access hole in disc helps aswell :y
-
having some shoes is always a good start....nasty grinding noise the other day .. well ok it sounded like someone had a chain in a bucket and wash shaking it... took it straight to the garage as it sounded terminal. When they opened everything up there were no shoes as such, just lots of bits that fell out :o
Handbrake works much better now :y
-
Assuming the handbrake shoes are okay, and nothing's seized .......
First, jack-up each side in turn, and adjust the shoes first.
THEN, adjust the cable to take-up any slack within it - and only if needed.
Never ever start this task by adjusting the cable first.

Start by SLACKENING the cable ;)

Yeah, its pretty difficult in an Omega ime due to the amount of effort needed to get the handbrake to lock.
But as said, it does its intended job plenty good enough when properly adjusted...
