Title: wheel bearings....ffs
Post by: feeutfo on 27 April 2009, 00:11:53
span the wheels and checked the bearings with the car on a ramp about 6 months ago. Lovely, nice and free, no knocking/play and no rubbing calipers even. Perfect.

Today had the car up and both front wheels have about half a mill of play, which was not there before. Exactly the same on both wheels, as far as i can tell by hand/feel anyway, how can this be? Do they have a tolerance?

Cant beleive they have both gone with same ware in 6 months. Makes me think i missed it first time but 2 people checked it after i did and we all agreed they where fine. Also a slight judder has now appeared on pre longed breaking, confirms it imho..?

I was wondering the same when I replaced mine a long while back, IIRC wrote something about the issue here. First I replaced the hub, did not torque it up to exactly 320 Nm (which is practically as tight as one can get the nut) but it was close enough. After about 6 months the play was there again and I put second new hub on, this time torqued up exactly and still I have the play... Not bad, but feelable, does not affect anything in driving. I do not have any explanation to the issue.

dont know how true this is

i was chatting to the mot tester when my car was done last month
and he had a printout of all the items on the car that had specific values and according to him the wheels are allowed to have approx 1mm play before they deem it as a failure

Nip the hub bolt a fraction to remove the play.

Thanks Mark, will do. :-) got to do drop links anyway.

Andy, yes have hurd similar from a tester. Also my old omega had just under a mill of play and passed with an advisory.

Cheers chaps.
