I've got the rocker cover leak on my 2.5 V6 and wondered what the worst case scenario would be if nothing was done. I paid £300 for my car and dont really want to spend the same amount on this problem.
The alternative is DIY. I've been reading the maintenance guides and wanted to ask if anyone with limited knowledge and skills has succesfully carried out this task.
What would you rate it out of ten in terms of difficulty?
thanks
-
I'd rate it really low. Very easy.
The only difficult bit is the nearside cover but removing the cable tray helps access a lot.
-
is that both the breathers and cam cover? where can i source the parts cheaply?
-
The following is the excellent OOF guide on how to change your cam cover gaskets and all the parts and part numbers you need:
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281
It is very advisable to only use genuine Vx parts (the cheap gaskets are rubbish and don't last long!) ;).
It is a straight forward job, although as already stated it is a bit fiddly when doing the passenger bank side of the engine. Just follow the excellent instruction and you will not go wrong! ;) ;) ;)
-
The parts will cost about £65 and you should only get genuine Vauxhall.
-
If Loo Knee can do the job then anybody can!
-
Also removing oil from spark plug holes is something to consider that could be tricky but generally loads of absorbent rags or a syringe with a long tube works ok.

Just as Lizzie says... genuine only :y

thanks for the replies. im growing more and more confident about doing this.
is cleaning the crankcase breather an equally easy job?
re: parts. i assume i need to get them direct from a vauxhall dealer?
-

I have feelings you know :D
Thought you were supposed to smilies at the end ::)
-
Try the OOF shop. comes as a complete kit for the cam cover and all genuine VX parts :y
-
it certainly isnt a £300 job as others have said £65 its really easy the hardest part is removing the IAC / inlet manifold and thats a easyish job anyway!
i attempted them on a v6 vectra yrs ago and i was a complete numpty then its a worthwhile job and will teach you abit about the GM V6 its deffinaly a noob friendly task anyway

no stock! :-[
anyone know when more stock is due?
-
Tbh, the hardest bit about repairing the cam cover gaskets is taking the plenum off.
Once thats off it is really easy.
If you can't get the bits from the oof shop(as they have sold out), try these...
ftp://http://www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk/
I bought all of the bits needed from them, apart from the sealant as they didn't have any.

I feel myself too, it must be a Stoke thing :-[
-
other expense is the purchase of a torque wrench that goes as low as 8Nm for approx £25-30 (unless you have one or can borrow one) :y
-
yes and torx sockets.
had a look at the vauxhall-car-parts website and they only have the rocker gaskets and o-rings :-? :(
-
