Title: Thermostat and link pipe
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 29 April 2009, 15:57:22
Having a problem getting the link pipe back on with new thermostat fitted.

Fitted thermostat and didn't need shorter bolts as flange was the same as on the old one!! However I cannot get the link pipe to fit properly. It fits in the thermostat no problem and I have no trouble getting the barsteward bolt in but when the barsteward bolt is tight the link pipe still has a lot of movement. :-[

Am I doing something obvious wrong? The link pipe goes in front of the dipstick fastener and the other thing right? Or does it go behind them?

Sounds like the spacer is missing...

I meant to say in my original post that the spacer is definitely there.

I just don't understand what is wrong!

Transfer pipe fully home on the thermostat housing? (Use vaseline)

where exactly is the movement (given the b bolt is tight)?

This is what I thought. I test fitted it off the car first and then marked the transfer pipe so that I knew how far it should go in. When its on the car it doesn't go quite as far in but that is because the fastening for the the dipstick and the other thing that fastens there are in the way.

I can still wiggle the whole transfer pipe!

I'm pretty sure its the same one I took off. It had the spacer on it.

Length so the bolt is fully home?

Is the lifting eye and dipstick tube tight?

There is still play in the lifting eye and dipstick tube too.

Do you mean length of the bolt Mark?

Am I right in saying that the lifting eye and dipstick go nearest the head with the transfer pipe on the outside?

Sounds like the bolt isn't fully home - is there some crap in there? or anyway you could be using the wrong bolt?

I am pretty sure its the right bolt but I will check if I have any others anywhere.

It should fit as lifting eye, dip stick tube bracket and then transfer pipe.

The bolt should have a spacer on it that about 8mm deep.....is this present?

The spacer is definitely there and I have them in the order you have said.

If I get a shorter bolt and it tightens everything up will it be safe to use it.

Right. Got the damn thing fitted but with a much shorter bolt and no spacer. Absolutely no play in the transfer pipe at all.

Will this work ok or am I likely to be stripping it down again to fix a water leak in the near future? :'(

Should be fine.

Cant work out how you ended up with a longer bolt though!

No neither can I!! I thought I had been really careful when I took everything off in making sure I knew where to put it back.

Fingers crossed then. Thanks Mark. :y
