Title: Car Forums and Paranoia
Post by: bigdods on 21 November 2007, 12:58:37
Is it just me or does reading (and posting) on a car forum make you paranoid , waiting for one of those big issues everyone is talking about to hit you.

My previous Omega I owned for 2.5 years , never used the forum just drove it around for 70k ish miles. Had a few (not unexpected) problems but nothing too worrying. Sold it 2 weeks ago and bought a 3.0 Elite. A few things werent working so I found this forum and got some great help. But now I find myself obsessed with reading about other peoples faults !

For example, I had a new cambelt and kit fitted before taking delivery. Ok for another 40k miles then :-) Now I read a post that over tensioning the belt can cause premature failure. And the work wasnt done by a VX specialist. Now Im worrying about my cambelt !

Is this kind of paranoia normal ?

I also suffer these symptoms on the TVR forum (Pistonheads) although I have become mostly immune to the worry now thanks to regular reassurance from the Independant garage I use.

Think I suffer with this too!

and remember, just cos you are paranoid, doesn't mean they won't break  ;D

I have done (or had done) more preventative mainatainance on this car, than any other
flip side is that it is my favorite car I've owned.

I think the biggest lesson from reading between the lines of issues that have cropped up is that you can't trust anyone. If you personally didn't change that cam belt (and tensioners) it's as good as not having been done.

That's why I've spent the last 3 evenings wrestling with a troublesome service on my wife's car. I get to the cam belt and find all sorts of things that were broken and subsequently botched at the last change (which was done by a main dealer).
