Post by: Richard A on 05 May 2009, 11:22:06
Changing the rad on sunday, all went well, drove the car Sunday and Monday, went to the car this morning, engine will turn over but will not fire, found the connector on the 'engine fan' hanging off so reconnected, checked all other connector things look ok.
Still will not fire, engine management light on and stays while engine turning over.
An help please !!

Paper clip test with just ignition on 12,31 then 12,31 again and again.
Should I be turning the engine over and reading the codes ???  :-[

It's started !!!!!!!!!!!
Took out paper clip, turned key, started first time !
Could it of been something to do with the time between replaceing the fan connector and turning the key ie some type of time delay ?
Very strange.
Thanks for your help.

crank sensor mate.

Edit. 31 no rpm signal. Def crank sensor. Sounds typical.

31 with engine off will always come up...no engine running so no crank running so no signal from crank!!

Do the paperclip test again with engine running...

P.S does sound like crank but 31 with engine off is normal for all so proves nothing

Code 19 is the crank one mate :y

right. Apologies to all. I was not clear.

I was translating 31, nothing more.

That aside for a moment. Def sounds like crank sensor to me even if 19 not present imho. But i may well be a bit premature, esp if fuel level low.

To clarify to Richard 31 does not mean crank sensor failure as all have said. Constant cranking and not firing is common with crank sensor failure. To then start i while later is also common warning of cs failure. 19 not present not unusual at this stage, as with my omega. If it happens again within a week or so suspect cs, verifie with paper clip test code 19.

Sorry mate, made a pigs ear of your thread.
Hope clear to all? Whoops.

Hi mate
Does your car go over 3500rpm?
I had code 19 and the car would not go over 3500rpm it just spluttered. Got new cs and now no probs. just got to get MOT (Failed on Broken Rear Coil spring and Steering Idler arm :'()
Hope you get it runing the way it should soon :y                                                                                                                                 Dave.

So no one thinks it is to do with the 'engine fan' connector falling off ??  :-/ :-/

Thanks for all the comments. :y

cant see how the fans could prevent the engine from starting?

maybe it has a built in failsafe?

Normaly the only thing that would happen there is that the fan would not function. but I could be mistaken. I wouldnt think that theres a connection. could it be an air bubble in the fuel line as it was low on fuel? :-/

Richard if you fancy a little tootle over to sunny Dudley I can read and clear the codes for you. Nearly always helps to have a 2nd set of eyes look over them too :y

Only you mate ;D ;D ;D ;)

However does have symptoms of dodgy crank sensor - suggest check codes again now its been running. If crank sensor there will be a 19 :y

Cheers 'Welung 666' Lee, however even with the engine running the only code is '12' over and over, watched it repeat 15 times.
So thanks for the offer but all ok, see what happens in the morning.
I will be going to the ABS/OOF meet at the Plank & Leggit on Sunday 10th May, it's a bit of a run ('A' roads and motorway 35 min from Walsall) but the people and the chat make it worth while, plus the pub is good.

If your going for a bit of a trek May 10 I would buy a genuine aux crank sensor and tak it with you...a) if you break down then the recovery service guy can probably fit it (although I doubt it as they usually say its fuel relay lol) or b) one of the guys at the meet may well be able to fit it for you so you can see its defo the problem (which it almost certainly will be) :y
