Having happily done 50k mls with nothing but a rad & glowplugs at 165K it sometimes struggles to pull up inclines at above 60, other times it's fine . Seems to happen after 30 miles or so but not always?
Any suggestions.
Starts fine hot, cold, on reserve.

Just read that . it's now on 165K . Rad & plugs done in past.

Check if its paperclippable (some are, some aren't), if so, post up codes.
Half expecting the dreaded 64, possibly also a boost fault code if it hasn't been particularly well serviced in the past

I think I have a similar problem, I go to overtake and there is no power at all. I have since realised that if I dip the clutch and let the engine idle briefly then it restores power again!
I think a sticking wastegate could be the problem but access down that side of the engine is a bit crap so I have not yet had a chance to investigate further.
Suppose you can't dip the clutch in an Auto so not sure if you can test the same theory :-/

That sounds classic 64 symptoms!
If you want to check wastegate, dead easy from underneath

What does a code 64 point at? I thought the access might be better from below but I haven't had the undertray off recently. It has been doing the same thing for about 12-15k

Clippable.
1-2, 9-6, 1-2. EGR?
Would this be the cause? And is it the thin clothy pipe that looked very dodgy when I had the manifold off?
Thanks.

Not sure what the problem could be with the EGR, but as far as I am aware it is a steel pipe going from the exhaust manifold to the throttle body.

EGR valve gets so full of soot/oil gungt mix that goes hard in there, that the valve cannot close/open properly,
thin cloth covered pipe on inlet sounds like the boost pressure sensor pipe, if its slightly blocked or leaking you will never get proper signal to ecu for boost pressure!! either of thes caould cause the mentioned ailment and both would creep up over a period of time so you wouldnt notice it happenig! >:(
-
Is the EGR valve cleanable? I'd say the boost pipe is def leaking as it looked almost torn off the manifold.
-
All this sounds interesting - gonna have a look at this on mine ASAP!
In fact, it may be a good idea to simply change the pipe from the EGR to the boost sensor, and give the EGR valve a good cleaning at the same time - gotta be worth a go!
At every 2.5K oil/filter-change, I also remove and clean the charge-air pipe, (embossed 'turbo diesel'), as at these intervals I'm finding that there's very little oil build-up in it. Doing so can only help the situation.

yep carb cleaner or thinners but it is a horrible job!! take throttle body off(4 bolts plus egr pipe after removing the black plastic turbo boost pipe) and you can see the moving parts inside ther just keep cleaning it and moving it by applying vac to the small bore connecter where the original pipe fits, or just suck on it with a clean bit of pipe attached :P until you can move it easily and watch it reseat itself when vac let off
and replace the boost sensor pipe with a length of leak off pipe asap!!

paint stripper. carb cleaner will be a long, tedious job

lol did say it was a horrible job guess i could have said long!!! :y

I'll adjudicate on whether it's long, horrible or tedious, but don't hold your breath. Time & weather are a problem, & it works most of the time.
Thanks for pointers,
BTW eml never came on.

I think I might have a gander at mine at the weekend - see if it is full of muck, i'm sure it will be because evryhting I take off the car is always full of muck :(

Doesn't on BMW engines, to assist with perceived improved reliability
