Title: No thermostat!
Post by: metalhip on 08 May 2009, 13:43:28
I have an Elite 3ltr auto R reg. My daughter has been using this car for a while and last weekend they were going from my house to theirs in Derby. Not far from Derby there was a bang and what they thought was smoke appeared at the back. They got it towed home and on Monday I went over to have a look and found that on the radiator, where the top hose fits had blown apart.
I had it recovered to my house where I have stripped the radiator out and have been checking other items. On removing the thermostat housing there was no thermostat in it.  >:(

Just a thought (sorry if its a stupid question ::)) - you are looking in the right place for the stat aren't you (under the plenum)  There was someone a while back I recall who thought the stat was missing and was looking somehere else.

I also thought that the stat was integral with the housing and you can't have no housing.

LOL I guess not ;D

But why go to all the trouble of the stripdown, BB and all, only to reassemble with no stat :-?

A previous garage probably couldn't get a pattern part at the weekend so just bunged it back together to make it a runner. I'm sure they're quite expensive .... for a stat  :-/

Just wondering how far it was towed, as it's auto, and what temp did it run at? ::)

It wasnt towed very far. The engine wasnt running because it had no water due to the radiator burst.

You were either $hit unlucky and had a radiator with a weak spot, or there is another problem elsewhere (head gasket) that caused the cooling system to pressurise beyond it's limits.

Either way, running without a stat alone would not have caused that to happen.

Get a new rad, then pressure test and take it from there.
