Just changed the Migs oil this morning and just given the old girl a check over im a bit concerned that the crank pulley is shaking on idle!
im sure its not supposed to do this??
when revs applied it stops shaking none of the other pulleys are shaking
belt seems to have anice bit of tension so im stumped? the crank pulley looks expensive!
-
Get it seen to ASAP not that it breaks and nacks up the complete engine.
-
You don't replace with a new one, do you ;)
Get a known good. I expect the two pulley halves are seperating?
-
yep your correct james its seperating!
can i drive it safely? i reckon if it broke off it mite snap the cambelt??
-
Just done more investigation!
seems like a simpleish job! the 6 torx bolts come off it would appear the centre one stays on?????
can some one confirm haynes is alittle but useless and doesnt mention it too well!

If the two parts separate it shoudn't (although still possible so don't take my word for it) snap the cambelt unless something pings off into the cambelt case, but it would cause problems with the aux belt and associated items.
The six small torx bolts are all that holds it on the the crankshaft. The big one in the middle isn't used for removing the pulley, but is used for turning the engine over manually during a cambelt change for example. You might also have a bit of rust set in between the pulley and the crankshaft, making removal a little bit difficult.
When you do get it off, and have a replacement, lightly clean any rust from the mating surfaces using a light rub of some fine wet and dry (only remove surface rust, not massive chunks of metal), and maybe a very small smear of grease. Whatever's recommended in the cambelt change DVD anyway. The pulley can be fixed when aligned in one way only. If you do it any other way not all of the bolts will go back in.
You'll have to remove some bits from in front of the engine to facilitate removal of the aux belt and then the crank pulley.
If you haven't got the cambelt change DVD from the shop, get it and watch it before you do the job; that way it will be clearer and you'll be less likely to make mistakes.

Tony Gnome can confirm that the pulley can hold on tightto the centre boss and might need a little persuading off! ::) ::)

im a very strong man Bionic arms!
managed to pull the crank pulley off! not bashing needed!
what the hell is the haynes manual on about with timing notches? i notice theres one on the pulley so i took a picture of it with the exact posistion on the block i also used some chalk to accurately mark its posistion
upon inspection the whole rubber bits split on the front and there are 2 cuts in it on the one front side ones nearly gone right through so id say its proper nackered
aux belts brand new theres a big aircon pipe blocking it in ::) so ive managed to leave it on

When the cank is in TDC the notch on the pulley alings with a notch on the block/cambelt case (can't remember which).
When you fit the replacement crank pulley, simply align the notch on the pulley with your chalk mark. Loosely fit the bolts to make sure it really is aligned, then tighten to the specified torque.
