Title: Do I need a new dispack????
Post by: kentman99 on 14 May 2009, 17:16:35
I feel a bit disappointed at the moment as ive just picked up my car after having the rocker cover gasket, leads and plugs changed. The guy from the garage said it still misses every now and then and the idle is a bit erratic. He reckoned the coil/dispack might need to be changed to make it run spot on. I went for a vaux gasket and plugs but used bosch leads as the vaux ones were £230! One of the main dealer parts places said that using non vaux leads can knacker the dispack but dunno whether there's any truth in that but I did wonder whether it would impact on the misfire prob. The other thing is that the exhaust is blowing and really sounds bad. Someone on here suggested that may also lead to poor running........I enquired about the price of genuine dispacks from vaux and they want £140 but I saw one on ebay for about £40.

If the dispack has been deep fried in dripping oil from the cam gaskets that sounds like the problem.
It is a bit of a pain to replace so be warned you need to be triple jointed and have arms like a gibbon..think the parts guy was talking rubbish as its oil/water or just age wear,n tear on  the dispack.

the mechanic charged me £90 labour today with me supplying the bits and said he'd do the dispack for £40. Does it have to be a genuine vaux part to be any good??

Bite his hand off for £40=00,that is a very good price..with that saving its almost worth buying a new VX one..do an ebay search and you will pick up a new one for half what stealers want.

You would spend more than £40=00 in plasters.

Would anybody envisage problems if I went for a cheaper pattern dispack?  The mechanic should me the old bits he replaced and the plugs looked very old and oily but the leads didn't appear to be in such bad shape.

a few points. 2.5 and 3.0 have a dispac at the rear of the engine and can not be bathed in oil. 3.2 and 2.6 have coil per plug set up and can be bathed in oil.
If you have leads then you have seperate dis pac at the rear. So no oil but they do split and allow the spark to escape.

If you have changed spark plugs and leads and your sure its still miss firing then it only leaves the dis pac to change, if your sure the plug leads are connected correctly (breakers on here can help or there is a guy in Heathrow who specialises in breaking omegas).

Exhaust unlikely to cause a missfire.

If hes done your cam covers make sure the breathers are cleaned or they will just blow again as its the breathers that cause this. Guide in maintenance for cleaning breathers. Print it off and show him, or diy. Its fairly easy.
The original dis pac is made by bosch, if you want new you could contact them direct or through a motor factors. Such as Camberly Auto factors or similar. Hth

I bought vaux gaskets and plugs (from main dealers) and bosch leads from halfords.

Vx plugs are best and cheapest just for info. But you should have no problems with those parts. Just to source a dis pac then.

Am I right in thinking the dispac I'll need is Vaux part no. 90511450?

Depends what shape plug connection it has ...oval or oblong..you need to check first as it could also be ...90541062..had similar issues when changed mine getting the correct one.

Are there any other areas worth checking that may cause the misfire other than the dispac? The garage did a compression test when they changed the plugs and leads and everything was okay. I'm assuming the misfire will affect the fuel economy as my car seems very very juicy!

if its an oval one your after drop me a PM

btw if you dont have a clue which one you have you can tell by Checking the Maf plug & Cranksensor plug if its square its old type if theyre oval then the dis pack should also be oval i cannot confirm this is correct but it appears to me to be right from breakers ive been to and my omega

oval ones P/N is 0221 503 017 ive got a genuine bosch gm worker here wasnt needed as it was my leads that were duffed

The dis pack can be a pain to replace but it aint that bad. Best thing is to remove the scuttle panel under the screen to give better access but it can easily be done with it still in place.

I find using a long reach 8mm 1/4" drive socket with a 4" extention easily reaches the bolts nearest to the front of the engine and leaves plenty of room for manover when ratcheting. Then for the rear two I use the same socket with a 2" extention and again find plenty of room. Obviously you are going to have to remove the plenum first but it is possible without removing injector rail  :y

Have fun  ;)

Thanks for the advice guys.  I know absolutely nothing about mechanics so I have to get the work at a garage. Vaux couldn't give me a definitive answer as to which dispac I have which is annoying as I'd hoped to source the part myself and have it ready for the mechanic. Ebay had them from £40 but my local motor factors place they start at £70 + vat!  I don't think the garage will want the car hanging about whilst I wait for the part to arrive.....As far as the misfire itself is concerned, could anything else be to blame other than the dispac, plugs and leads? From what the previous owner said the fault came on all of a sudden, very much like the situation like somebody else has posted on the forum recently.

The very same thing happened to me today. Been noticing over the past couple of weeks that she's been down a little bit on power, but never gave it much thought as it wasn't that bad.

Went to Oxford this morning, she was running fine, nothing unusual. Got back in and started her up, and oh my god was she running BAD. Uneven tickover, and spluttering whenever I blipped the throttle.

Had to limp her back home which was about a 12 mile drive and it was excruciatingly painful for me and the Mig. Just the slightest touch of the throttle and she juddered like crazy. The drive down the A34 at 40mph made the journey even worse.

When I finally got home I threw my car keys at the wall, sat down and swore a lot hehe.
