my computers together :-[
I have a tower computer upstairs on XP. I have just had a wireless laptop and a router.
I have got everything plugged in, both computers I go online with :y
What I want to do is Network them together so I can move filoes between the two and print out from downstairs.
I have tried and failed on the laptop as it is Vista and very different from XP (well thats my excuse).
Also what stops anyone just using your wireless? I don't seem to have a password or anything?

first can you ping the other PCs ip from the command line as a first step..
Normally their ip numbers start with 192.168.1.x
if this is not OK then you must set the local "firewall OFF" for every pc you want to reach
then use find computer option to find them in the network
if it asks a user and a password this means you must use the same admin name and password for the ones you want to reach

Assuming both computers are using the router....
You need to create a share, say on the desktop (right click on the folder you want to share select sharing, then you can either click the share wizard for network or just select 'i understand about sharing just share it' . Give it a share name.
Then from laptop (i assume vista does this the same as XP) You need to select map network drive (from my computer....tools) then enter the path of the share.....ie it needs to be in format
\\deskt"My Naff Code Reader"putername\sharename
Job done :y
I assume the printer is connected to the desktop......if so you need to share the printer too
Then on the laptop select add printer and select add printer connected to another computer (again assuming vista does this in the same way as XP)
Next.....
I assume you have encryption enabled on the router.....theres different types of encryption.....WEP is not really recommended......to easy to 'crack' ........you should have a passkey set on the router.....and the first time you connected your laptop to the router it would have wanted the passkey.....once entered correctly on the laptop it wont ask for it again :y

I wouldnt recommend doing this......I have the XP firewalls turned ON on all my pc's doesnt stop me connecting to them :y

i will try and decypher what Cem has said
To ping a PC you need to do the following
start>all programs>accessories>command prompt>then type in 'ipconfig'
a load of details will pop up you are looking for IPv6 address, it will look like this 192.168.1.105, this is the IP (internet profile) address for that machine
the other thing you will need to do is ensure that all the PC's on the network have the same workgroup name, to do this:
Start>control panel>System>advanced system settings>workgroup name
hope this helps
if i have missed out anything/got anything wrong please correct me

Think this might only work if pc's are in the same workgroup or domain........and the folders are shared.

there's a parameter in firewall options as "dont allow exceptions" if this is checked the firewalled pc is in ghost mode..And you can never map or see this pc..By default I think this is not checked..In general for networking PC s its minimum of few pages to read depending what protocol you use.. ;)
I tried to give simple check too see PC s see each other or not..

if you search by ip and their subnet masks are ok they will see each other..Normally if PCs are configured as DHCP they take the ip numbers from the router ..
-
also for transferring files you can find the other PCs disk as 192.168.1.x\c$ (administrative share) from the explorer bar (if firewall is off)..
But for printers you need a real share
its normally accepted a standard for beginners to do the job with the simplest configuration (for this I tell change the firewall off anyway most routers nowadays have a self firewall)

Sorry guys but I understand PC's in general and I'm struggling with some of the advice so heaven knows how Loo-Knee will get through it !!
I recently added our laptop as a wireless PC networked with our hard wired PC and it couldn't have been simpler....in Start / Control Panel / Wireless Network setup there was a wizard that asked me to plug a USB memory stick into one of the PC's, wait a mo, then plug it into the other for a couple of secs.
Hey presto - networked pc's
I may be crap at car maintenance, but nerdy subjects.....
Hope that helps, LK
Steve
