Title: Radiator fan??
Post by: ianph on 03 March 2009, 17:10:57
Not sure if this is a dumb question as i dont have the greatest knowledge of Omegas YET. The radiator fan(largest one) starts working as soon as engine is running and seems to be on all the time.

Is this correct or is there some kind of problem?

The fans will run all the time if you've got air-con switched on.

Air con not on....

Temp gauge when warm always within normal(normally just above 90).I will add that it takes a good 10 minutes to get to this temperature(which im not sure is normal???).Just noticed today that fan is always whirring.

Engine

2.0l 16v petrol X20XEV

.........could be radiator fan switch on side of radiator, sure if they fail the fans stay on all the time, if it's not overheating anyway.........

Yeah definitely not overheating. Will check switch.Just annoying constantly hearing the whirring of the fan.Could this affect fuel economy ?

sounds like the thermostat for the fan to me.
as for the fuel economy, i wouldn't have thought so.

Yes it will have an impact on the fuel ecconomy, but dont disconnect it as you may need the fan in traffic.

What temperature should the Fan come on?? How do you note it has indeed come on...

Apologies but I am new and am learning the tricks,,

Immediately after starting you can hear the whirring of the fan.I have lifted the bonnet on a number of occasions right after starting and it is working.
Motor takes a good 10 minutes driving to get up to running temp. which i think is a bit slow.
Could anyone tell me where these components that need to be checked are located please?

Is the first plan of action to replace the radiator fan switch?...The fan still comes on and stays on all the time when ignition is on.

Do they go off when to stop the engine?

So, which fan.....the one in the engine bay on the coolant rad or the one at the front of the car on the aircon condenser?
Title: Re: Radiator fan??
Post by: ianph on 06 March 2009, 12:18:16
Its the big one on the coolant radiator.Turns off when key taken out,but as soon as ignition is on the fan is running.Running temperature rarely gets above 90 and takes at least 15 minutes to get there.

Just out of interest,is there a photo on this site of a 2.0 engine bay?
Not a complete dimwit, just learning about omegas.
Might help me find out what some of th parts are without asking.

can you find the switch that should be on the left or right side of the main rad in the engine bay. it should have 3 wires comeing out of conecter :question

Yep i have located the switch which is in the top right hand corner, underneath a large coolant hose. The connector does indeed have 3 wires coming out of it.The actual switch itself has a powdery green deposit all around the seal.I disconnected the connector and cleaned the switch and then used contact cleaner on the terminals. No change at all.

I have seen that there are three types of radiator switch for my model.Ive ruled one out as its a completely different shape. The other two are part nos.:

90376209 (AC)
90339409 (WG)

Im assuming i should go for the one with AC but not 100%.Is it most likely to be the switch which is causing the problem?

yes go for one with a/c as you have it,but to make sure its the switch you can do a simple test.

get some wire about 2 inch long and both ends with bare wire and with connecter of and ignition on but car not running croos coneecter terminals you should get fan working if it does then it will b switch i had to do a test like that a while ago on my old cav and it was switch, they fail cos of all the heat evrn tho most are brass :y

Right....

Just looked at the connector..there are only 2 wires coming out of the connector,no space for any more(definitely not one missing),and even  when this is unplugged the fan comes on as soon as ignition is turned on.Only way to turn off at the moment is to pull the larger connector that goes straight to the fan(in middle of rad.)

Any ideas?

Well the part i need must be this one, because the on with'AC' is a 3 terminal and mine is just 2.

http://partfinder.smpeurope.com/index.html?p=156&partid=50195&from=153&recordset=208&value=50195

I do have AC but it must be this switch as its the only one in the 2.0L range that has 2 terminals.

there is always a first time
and it only takes a minute to try with another relay
which is cheaper than buying parts to try and see if it cures it

Update:

Well it seems i bought the wrong part.Well right part but wrong job.

The switch i changed was the two wired one on the top right of the radiator. It wasnt until i took the coolant hose off and took the old switch out that i noticed there is a bigger three wired switch on the bottom left of the radiator.

Sure enough the fan is still running as soon as i turn ignition on.What was the switch i changed??

The top plug on mine, controls the engine bay fuse box fan, and the main big rad fan... (Sensor died yesterday in the hot weather, so had to bridge it..)
