although the rising cost of petrol is annoying, its not expensive!!!

I am with clarkson on this one, its still very cheap for the work done to it.

At the end of the day its 2/3p per litre extra. So to fill up tank its about £3 more.

Further more the tax.... it is high in this country but i would rather pay more tax for better roads, and less tax for worst roads.

I have driven in america and their roads are shocking bad!

Europe too, Germans have the best, but in france the petrol is only slightly cheaper but they have tolls everyware!

When i started driving it was about 79p a litre.... in 6 years its gone up £0.20! big deal!!

And Martin, bottled water is £1.20 + a liter.... which needs a lot less refinement in petrol!

You must be on drugs if you think petrol is not dear  :D

As for the roads thats a joke..Tell me where the roads in the UK are better than Europe..I have been driving for over 30 years all over Europe and the UK and your telling me the roads are better here..

As for the rise in fuel cost 20p in 6 years..Its gone up 1p every week for the last 4 weeks..

6 years of driving your still learning. ;)

Well 60p or so of that is tax so say 40p a litre at most, production is industrial with huge amounts processed.

Bottled water is a lot of profit and expensive packaging, how much do you think petrol would cost in a litre bottle.

More to the point 2 litres of Tesco water is 17p

But I would compare with the piped in water with a huge expence in pipe work and waste handling at roughly £1.20 per 1000 litres

yep i heard the same thing today about a fuel protest but i regard it as a chinese whisper until it happens
watch the garages as everyone hears about it and goes straight to the garage to fill up... :( and then nothing happens!!!  i dont think the govt would allow anything like last time to happen espec under the new terrorist laws the police would be straight in to disperse em...

Still only 4p  ;)

Its really NOT expensive...

The problem of UK roads is congestion. Europe is massive.... a lot less cars on the road.

Driven on French motorways in the wet? Down right bloody dangerous! Can't see anything!

Far, far safer on UK motorways....

Petrol is in everyones mind because we see the prices every day, driving in America it was no cheaper running car there.

Yes petrol is a quater of the price.... but the cars do almost a quater of the MPG that Eurpean cars do.

The American heap i hired did 12 mpg!

I understand both sides of this, but i dont think that you can compare Petrol with Water.

The price of Petrol on its own, for the refinement it goes through is ok, its just the Tax that is put on top is the bad thing, not just in the UK but all over the world.

Why do we pay Road Tax, if people are saying (and i quote Tunnie)

Further more the tax.... it is high in this country but i would rather pay more tax for better roads, and less tax for worst roads.

what Tax are you talking about, Road Tax or the Tax on Petrol?

The Individual Governments, cant afford to lower the Tax at the pumps, because the Revenue is not only going towards the roads, but filling Financial holes in every government Department, Including the Politicians pocket!!!!!!

Just received this email from the 'Transaction' forum:

Dear Member

Please excuse the impersonal nature of this email. This email has been sent to all registered users on the forum to request that in your PROFILE settings, you at least fill in your location in the UK and your occupation. This is to enable us to get a better picture of our membership. This info that you provide is not used for any sinister purposes, but so we can direct our resources into the right areas when the time is right.

I am attending a meeting on Tuesday evening and will hopefully come back with an answer as to how we are going to address our protest action.

Best Wishes

The time is coming, best get ready for it.  :y

Does it rain different here in the UK then..

I was in France this week and it rained and i could see the same as if i was in the UK..Ok some roads are better than others when its raining i admit..

As far as prices at the pumps go if your happy to pay the price then dont moan in the future about it as you have done in the past..I tend to say what i mean in a debate about everything, And  some people will take offence, if you do so be it, I am not happy to pay the cost of the rising fuel..And i dont buy expensive water either. I much prefer a beer.. :D

Not driven in a big down poor over the water then, both Belgium & France have shocking bad drainage on their motorways.

Hence French motorways have 80mph standard limit, but lowers to 50mph limit in the wet. Driving in Belgium at speed, with a heavy rain the visibilty is much worse than the UK.

This is the wrong forum to discuss petrol prices, Omega's are big heavy thirsty cars. My mate has a Fiat Punto, which he gets 55mpg from.

I'd rather get 30mpg and pay the extra fuel for an Omega, than drive a Punto  ;)

Hence i don't moan about fuel costs, if it gets too much then its time to buy a Corsa Diesel!

Thank god my cossie is garaged up for winter that averages 8mpg, I feal like i'm driving for free now in me omega.
At the end of the day it can't really drive a big thirsty car and then complain about the price of running it.
Small diesel anyone.

Im not moaning about running cost of an Omega as mines of the road and i only use approx £5 per week in private fuel anyway..Its just the rising cot of fuel but there again we are all gutless here in the UK not like France where they speak out and take action.. By the way i do 100,000 miles per year so i have a bit of experience on the roads even in the rain.. ;D ;D ;D

Oh dear,

2 things, One Fiats, I always remember seeing a Fiat Panda, that had a "T" bone. It was in a 30MPH zone so no real damage ?. On the contrary, they were pulling the drivers door off to get in, it looked like an aluminium beer can, bent so easy. Driving an Omega, there are 2 impact bars in the doors which are so much more substantial than a Fiat. Drive a Fiat?, eh no thanks.

On the point of fuel costs, any thing Clarkson says is irrelevant. How much does he earn ?, 10's on thousands ?, 100's of thousands ?, Millions ?. How about the other end of the scale ?. I know a bloke who has to fill his Omega but earns £5.50 per hour. Not a lot, do the math, but, after the b*****ds in the Revenue and Customs get their cut, not a lot left, so this rise is a significant amount.

what we need is a fair Tax System.

For example :

All persons driving 4*4 or SUV's without a Farmer exemption certificate  +500%
All persons driving BMW, Volvo, Mercedes, Audi, +300%

the rest of VAG group +200%

Combined with :
South of Watford gap +100%
South of Leicester  +50%
South of Carlise +25%
Edinburgh, Glasgow +75%
The rest standard rate

The trouble is : Lots of people don't earn anywhere the rates that clown like Clarkson earn, so its not fair to deny them transport on cost grounds. How do you balance it ?
Ken
