Title: spraying my rusty bits
Post by: kjf7 on 29 May 2009, 00:20:52
not sure if i should give it a try but been quoted £700 to fix and respray everything apart from roof and boot but thinking is it worth it i would love it to be a minter so started thinking i might try it myself i'am a decorator so i've got a good idea what to do but just worried, also had a guy tell me that if i had it done by a company rust will probably come back in 6-7 months as they most likley wont lead fill or something like that. Any suggestions would be smashing :y

No mater how good a respray you get, unless the rust is removed it will come back and maybe even within weeks!

I doubt you will find many Bodyshops who even know how to Lead fill, sadly it is a lost skill.

I would suggest if you are prepared to spend £700 on paintwork you should sell the Omega you have and put the money towards  a better one!

I'm all for folk having a go, but it could go horribly wrong. You could be an excellent decorator but if you've not done any or much spraying of vehicles, I wouldn't recommend using your Mig as a practice piece.
So many things to take into account. Air and subject temperature, humidity, paint viscosity, spraying technique etc.  I certainly wouldn't consider doing it myself.
At least with a professional job you would have some form of guarantee.
If they don't offer some form of guarantee on their work, find someone that will.  :y

My son is a Electrician and very good at what he does, but he doesn't know a Starter motor from an Alternator!
