I noticed this when putting new wheels on.
It affects the osf wheel and when I had jacked up that corner I noticed a slight side to side movement of the hub assembly.
This is when holding at 3 and 9 o'clock. It does not happen in other positions.
I had a look to see what was moving and there was a millimetre or two of movement from the hub assembly, track rods, to what I think is the idler (is the idler on the os or ns?). The movement did not continue across to the other side and the other side does not exhibit this behaviour; it was rock solid when I checked.
Also, when braking from about 60 to 40 (give or take a bit) I get the shakes and I am assuming what I described above is the cause.
So, would all this seem correct, and what should I replace to fix it? Should I check anything else in case more bits are worn?

Have a look at the idler arm c if theres any play in it. (up or down) on the pas side.

I'm quite sure I checked all directions of the hub assembly on the ns, which was good, no movement. I didn't check anything else directly though.
Should I still go back and check other steering components directly?

yep jack up the car and put your hand on the far side of the idler arm c if it moves. ( should be no movement )

My problem is that I want to get this fixed at the weekend so I need to know today what parts I am likely to replace so I can get my dealer to reserve or order them for tomorrow.
The movement is only on the offside and doesn't go past the steering arm on that side.
Should I get one anyway?

Only if its Knackered yes. check first and then you could order a new steering idler arm. might not be that could be something else but you can then scrstch it from the list.

If its the off side (drivers) then it wont be steering idler as thats only on the near side.
If tehre is no play at 12 and 6 then its unlikely to be wheel bearing (get somebody to press the brake whilst feeling for play).
The favourite would be track rod end given the description

I don't think it's the bearing as play is only at 3 and 9, and moves along the track rod.
As far as I can tell the movement stops at the joint on the steering arm, like something isn't fitting properly.
I can't check it now but when I get home I will have another look to make sure I know where the movement is.
