Title: Strange Noise On Start Up & Throaty Exhaust
Post by: kentman99 on 06 June 2009, 16:34:06
Now Ive finally got the misfire ( a new bosch dispac supplied and fitted for £150 fixed the fault) sorted out im moving to the other probs!  When I start the car it always takes a couple of seconds to fire up and when its running you get a sound not unlike a washing machine on a spin.  The noise stops after about a minute. The exhaust sounds a bit throaty and when you rev it up and it has a little rattle when it gets hot. I had the centre boxes replaced as advised by a local exhaust place but they didn't think anything else needed doing. Ive read on here about the problems attributed to the EGR so I wondered if this maybe the issue.  I'd be grateful of any advice. Thanks

Your strange noise on start-up is probably the secondary air injection (SAI) pump on its last legs.  Can be disconnected without problems, though you may be able to fix it if you're keen on the environment and making your cats last as long as poss.  Possible fix linked here:  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1220303614.  :)

Sorry, don't know a lot about exhausts and EGRs though.

Rattles are often just the heatshield for the cats. Can just be cut of if it is.

how can i tell if the cat is on its last legs?  Wouldn't the exhaust place have spotted it??
