Title: Whining noise (wheel bearing?)
Post by: hotrod on 08 June 2009, 13:52:29
Hi all,

I've got a 2.6 V6 CD which is making a strange whining noise at slow speeds. The noise disappears when I go faster, but this worries me - I had a similar problem with my old 2.8i Capri, and one day one of the wheel bearings welded itself to the stub axle and span me out sideways at 60 on the M40... ended up facing the wrong way on the hard shoulder and had to be recovered by the AA. The attending coppers were quite amused by it though!

I'd like to avoid a repeat of that kind of interesting situation if possible - how hard is it to check/replace the wheel bearings on an Omega? Something I can do myself, or should I take it to a garage?

If it's not the wheel bearing, what else should I be looking for?

You can check the wheel bearings by jacking the front of the car up and with the wheels still on the car, put your hands at quarter to three and move from side to side, then at half past twelve and do the same. If there is movement than normal replace the wheels bearings. The come complete with the hub.

I don't think it's the diff, it sounds like it's too far forward for that. Could be the gearbox - silly question, where do I top that up (I thought the gearbox and engine shared the oil supply?)?

I'll check the bearings at the weekend (or more accurately get my brother to do it - I'm no kind of mechanic at all!). Oddly, the whining started when I got it back from a main dealer after having it MOT'd and the handbrake adjusted... Should have taken it back I suppose...

Wheel bearings are usually more of a hum at lower speeds.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'll get the wheel bearings checked at the weekend, but from the sounds of the erm, sound, it's not likely to be that. I'll let yuo all know what I find. if anything :-)
